Historia
The daughter of a Chinese mother and a Japanese father, Gail Tsukiyama uses the Japanese invasion of China during the late 1930s as a somber backdrop for her unusual story about a 20-year-old Chinese painter named Stephen who is sent to his family's summer home in a Japanese coastal village to recover from a bout with tuberculosis. Here he is cared for by Matsu, a reticent housekeeper and a master gardener. Over the course of a remarkable year, Stephen learns Matsu's secret and gains not only physical strength, but also profound spiritual insight.

Beautiful story
Revisado: 02-23-25
Told sensitively, personally and culturally awarely. With awareness of what it was like as a Chinese person living in Japan and being immersed in Japanese culture with the Japanese-Chinese war playing in the background

Historia
It is 1872, and a series of gruesome murders is the talk of London. Mycroft Holmes - now 26 and a force to be reckoned with at the War Office - has no interest in the killings; however his brother Sherlock has developed a distasteful fascination for the macabre to the detriment of his studies, much to Mycroft's frustration. When a ship carrying cargo belonging to Mycroft's best friend Cyrus Douglas runs aground, Mycroft persuades Sherlock to serve as a tutor at the orphanage that Douglas runs as a charity, so that Douglas might travel to see what can be salvaged.

Historia
Breakfast of Champions (1973) provides frantic, scattershot satire and a collage of Vonnegut's obsessions. His recurring cast of characters and American landscape was perhaps the most controversial of his canon; it was felt by many at the time to be a disappointing successor to Slaughterhouse-Five, which had made Vonnegut's literary reputation.

I didn't like this work compared to others by this author which I wholeheartedly enjoyed. In fact, I stopped and erased it instead of finishing.

Kept me enthralled
Revisado: 10-31-22
So many stories in one. sucj an apt summary that women, not just men are heroes of war. But one must listen to all the stories within to fully comprehend the author's conclusion.
The performance was excellent.

Miracle and Wonder: Conversations with Paul Simon is part memoir, part investigation, and unlike any creative portrait you’ve ever heard before. Recorded over a series of 30 hours of conversation between Simon, Gladwell, and Gladwell’s oldest friend and co-writer, journalist and Broken Record podcast co-host Bruce Headlam, the conversation flows from Simon’s music, to his childhood in Queens, NY, to his frequent collaborators including Art Garfunkel and the nature of creativity itself.

I did not know I would love this but I did
Revisado: 09-27-22
I grew up with Paul Simon. Without deliberately setting out to do so he chronicled my lifetime along with America's.
My favorite part told the story of the music he built with South African musicians and singers that correlated in such a timely way with the end of apartheid. As the music spanned the globe... it spoke to my heart and many others' too. This telling brought to my consciousness how much the entire body of Paul Simon's work enriched my life and I am greatful for it.

Historia
The Ramayana, one of the world's greatest epics, is also a tragic love story. In this brilliant retelling, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni places Sita at the center of the novel: This is Sita's version. The Forest of Enchantments is also a very human story of some of the other women in the epic, often misunderstood and relegated to the margins: Kaikeyi, Surpanakha, Mandodari.

Well done but went on way too long
Revisado: 02-07-22
I loved it but struggled to finish because it was so long a story.
Important points were made that have been buried by custom repeatedly. How many times does the message of respecting women have to be learned?
