I reviewed this from AudioBookBoom in exchange for an honest review.

Hardman is an ex-cop come PI, hired by a father who's daughter has gone missing. Hardman enters into the world of 70's Atlanta prostitution and pimping to track the girl down with some interesting twists and turns along the way.

The hardman series of books are a product of the 70's which have stood the test of time surprisingly well. There are small elements of dialog within the book that reveal attitudes of the 70's but it certainly doesn't overpower the overall story.

The choice of narrator is perfect for this book genre. I'd certainly go back and read another Hardman book now

I don't normally lean towards murder mystery fiction but this was an engaging book from the beginning with a narration tone that well suited the genre.

The idea of a hitman being contracted to kill himself was a unique story premise which opened up two parallel story arcs: who would put a contract out on his life and who contracted Charley for his previous kill. Are the two related and just how does "The Agency" behind the contract killings work?

Without spoiling the story, there were a number of potential characters along the way that might have put a hit out on Charley, mixed in with family drama and complexity along the way. Charley's wife moving out with his children certainly increases the story pace and thoughts as to if/how his wife could be related to the kill contract on Charley.

For a supposed calm contract killer, seeing Charley making poor and hasty decisions and getting into close physical altercations throughout the book keeps the fast pace going. The list of possible candidates for setting up Charley's hit also increases and weaves through the story. Really enjoyed never quite knowing which way the story would go, particularly the penultimate scene where The Agency becomes clear.

This audioobook was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review and I'd now quite likely listen/read to Thompson's other books
