Historia
From the archives of the American Film Institute comes a unique picture of what it was like to work in Hollywood from its beginnings to its present day. Gleaned from nearly three thousand interviews, involving four hundred voices from the industry, Hollywood: The Oral History, lets a listener “listen in” on candid remarks from the biggest names in front of the camera—Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Harold Lloyd—to the biggest behind it—Frank Capra, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Jordan Peele, as well as the lesser known individuals that shaped what was heard and seen on screen.

Best book on Hollywood that I’ve ever read
Revisado: 10-17-23
Well, my title says it all. I have read quite a few books about Hollywood. Most of them are the scandal sheet kind and tabloid. This is a very serious and very informative history.
I love the style of the rating also with mainly quotes from people in the business .

Historia
In Searching for Stonewall Jackson, historian Ben Cleary examines not only Jackson's life, but his own, contemplating what it means to be a white Southerner in the 21st century. Now, as statues commemorating the Civil War are toppled and Confederate flags come down, Cleary walks the famous battlefields, following in the footsteps of his subject as he questions the legacy of Stonewall Jackson and the South's Lost Cause at a time when the contentions of politics, civil rights, and social justice are at a fever pitch.

Excellent Memoir and travelogue
Revisado: 05-12-21
Don’t be turned off by the negative reviews of this book. It is just fine. It is not a formal biography of Jackson, if you are looking for that look elsewhere. This is a ‘journey’ taken by a man that I can well identify with. In many’s it reminds me of two other books “Confederates in the Attic” and “My American Revolution”. The authors reading is perfect too.

Historia
As the Confederacy felt itself slipping beneath the Union juggernaut in late 1864, the South launched a desperate counteroffensive to force a standoff. Its secret weapon? A state-of-the-art raiding ship whose mission was to sink the U.S. merchant fleet. The raider's name was Shenandoah, and her executive officer was Conway Whittle, a 24-year-old warrior.

Excting and interesting sea adventure
Revisado: 08-12-19
I had listened to the abridged version first, not knowing at the time that it had been abridged. Thus, I was curious to know more. This reading is very well done, but it is difficult to get the first reader out of your mind and if I had to choose I think the reader of the abridged version was slightly better. The abridged version gave all of the salient points about the “Shenandoah’s” incredible cruise but if you ‘want it all’ you might do better with this version. Excellent book.

Historia
Rick Atkinson recounts the first 21 months of America’s violent war for independence. From the battles at Lexington and Concord in spring 1775 to those at Trenton and Princeton in winter 1777, American militiamen and then the ragged Continental Army take on the world’s most formidable fighting force. Full of riveting details and untold stories, The British Are Coming is a tale of heroes and knaves, of sacrifice and blunder, of redemption and profound suffering. Rick Atkinson has given stirring new life to the first act of our country’s creation drama.

One of the Best!
Revisado: 08-12-19
I’m anxious to continue with this excellent series. Volume 1 only whetted my appetite for more. I like the style of writing. Before even breaking open the book I thought it might be that sad retelling of Paul Revere, the minute men etc.. The author has all that of course but me make it alive and refreshingly new with nuggets of new information. Volume 1 is a winner all the way.

Historia
Regarded as a masterpiece today, 2001: A Space Odyssey received mixed reviews. Despite the success of Dr. Strangelove, director Stanley Kubrick wasn't yet recognized as a great filmmaker, and 2001 was radically innovative, with little dialogue and no strong central character. Author Michael Benson explains how 2001 was made, telling the story primarily through the two people most responsible for the film, Kubrick and science fiction legend Arthur C. Clarke. Benson interviewed Clarke many times, and has also spoken at length with Kubrick's widow, Christiane.

This highly regarded war memoir was a best seller in both Japan and the United States during the 1960s and has long been treasured by historians for its insights into the Japanese side of the surface war in the Pacific. The author was a survivor of more than one hundred sorties against the Allies and was known throughout Japan as the Unsinkable Captain.

I had read Hara's account back in the 1970's and enjoyed it immensely. I am very glad that audible is offering this audio version for a new generation. This account should be of interest to anyone interested in the war in the Pacific.

Historia
Touched off by a terrorist act in Bosnia and spreading all too quickly beyond the expectations of those who were involved, World War I was an unprecedented catastrophe with a ghastly cost. After this first "total war"-the first conflict involving entire societies mobilized to wage unrestrained war, devoting all their wealth, industries, institutions, and the lives of their citizens to win victory at any price - the world itself would never be the same.

Excellent history of World War I
Revisado: 09-14-16
Would you consider the audio edition of World War I: The Great War to be better than the print version?
Not familiar with the print version
What was one of the most memorable moments of World War I: The Great War?
The futility of the Western front.
Have you listened to any of Professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not, this is my first but his enunciation is perfectly serviceable.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The mention of the casualties.
Any additional comments?
Very we'll done and I would like to obtain the course on World War II as a result of listening to this one.

Historia
The Great War of 1914-1918 was the first mass conflict to fully mobilize the resources of industrial powers against one another, resulting in a brutal, bloody, protracted war of attrition between the world's great economies. Now, 100 years after the first guns of August rang out on the Western front, historian William Philpott reexamines the causes and lingering effects of the first truly modern war.

One of the most boring books that I have ever read
Revisado: 08-21-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Only a World War One specialized historian and even in that category I'm doubtful. This 17 chapter books outlook could be summarized in one chapter. This book was extremely tiring to listen to.
Would you ever listen to anything by William Philpott again?
I don't think so. It wasn't the narrator. No narrator could save this book. Because I waited so long to listen to it I didn't apply for a refund but I should have. I can't recommend this book to anyone. And, I AM interested in World War I.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Nothing could have saved it.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not much.
Any additional comments?
Avoid this book.

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war - and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

Disappointed and expected much more
Revisado: 04-07-16
What would have made The Man in the High Castle better?
More description of the society the characters lived in. The mini-series which was adapted from this book was much better. This story has a really "let down" ending
What was most disappointing about Philip K. Dick’s story?
The ending was no good. What was the point of the whole story?
Which character – as performed by Jeff Cummings – was your favorite?
The antique dealer was the most interesting character.
What character would you cut from The Man in the High Castle?
The Italian boyfriend character.
Any additional comments?
Just expected more. This book is just dated
