Historia
A classic work of historical fiction from the author of Rebecca and The Birds. Honor Harris is only 18 when she first meets Richard Grenvile, proud, reckless - and utterly captivating. But following a riding accident, Honor must reconcile herself to a life alone. As the English Civil War is waged across the country, Richard rises through the ranks of the army, marries and makes enemies, and Honor remains true to him. Decades later, an undaunted Sir Richard, now a general serving King Charles I, finds her.

Anything read by Juliet Stevenson is wonderful
Revisado: 02-02-25
Excellent narration, as always. Story has a lot of “telling”, ie the main character hears rather than sees much of the action. Very creative fiction based on obviously meticulous research.

Historia
Oscar Wilde's first play confronts the hypocrisy of public "morality" compared with genuine, private kindness. The reasons for its continued popularity are not difficult to identify: the play's witty dialogue contains many of Wilde's most quoted aphorisms, its stylish setting provides opportunities for elegant presentation, and its cast of memorable characters play out a story which is genuinely moving. This new audio production brings together a full cast worthy of Wilde's creative genius.

Juliet Stevenson makes every book great
Revisado: 12-19-24
The story is very compelling, and it has a few twists, one of which you don’t see coming. But it’s the narrator, Juliet Stevenson, who really brings the story to life, with numerous voice characterisations that never falter.

Too much suspension of disbelief, flat characters, didn’t age well
Revisado: 09-21-24
I remembered enjoying the film version a long time ago and thought I’d listen to the original, particularly as I discovered the ending was quite different. Yet the same implausibility stood out from what I remember of the film version—why the remaining characters would think each other guilty when it’s clearly indicated…well, the “Christie trick” just isn’t very good, really. Stevens does a pretty fine job of narration, although I found his choice of voice for one of the characters to be somewhat annoying, and it was difficult to tell them apart many times—although I realize that given the flat characterization it’s hard to come up with different voices, as we know so little about them as characters. (And the characterization isn’t consistent. I can’t say more without spoilers, I imagine the “trick” itself is impressive enough that your brain ignores all the things that remain unexplained, and finally, unbelievable. The anti-semitism is more than off-putting to say the least, and while excuses can be made for time period, etc., the fact remains the story itself just doesn’t hold up well. Really disappointed as I’d been looking forward to revisiting it.

AI narrator ruins a book
Revisado: 07-03-24
So disappointing. I’m convinced this narrator is AI. At times the emphasis is completely wrong, intonation is robotic, and pauses between sentences and phrases are precisely uniform so it’s hard to discern textual breaks. This latter is particularly disruptive at the end of chapters, but it’s noticeable and disruptive throughout. Better to read this one.

Distracting, error-filled narration
Revisado: 02-25-23
The story itself is pretty good, but the narrator’s horrible attempts at a British accent are difficult to get past. Matthew sounds like a schoolgirl’s exaggerated romantic fantasy, which, to be fair, isn’t entirely the fault of the narrator, but she surely doesn’t help. Worse is her mistaken pronunciation of “bow,” like bowing to someone, when contextually we’re talking the thing that comes with arrows. This kind of error happens more than once and is jarring. Returned.
