Historia
Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

One if the most beautifully written and narrated books
Revisado: 04-13-24
It’s rare that I want to read a book after I’ve listened to it but this is one of them. It’s a powerful story of memory, war, love and redemption. When I read it I will hear the wonderful voices of the narrators.

Historia
Touched off by a terrorist act in Bosnia and spreading all too quickly beyond the expectations of those who were involved, World War I was an unprecedented catastrophe with a ghastly cost. After this first "total war"-the first conflict involving entire societies mobilized to wage unrestrained war, devoting all their wealth, industries, institutions, and the lives of their citizens to win victory at any price - the world itself would never be the same.

Riveting and Well Organized
Revisado: 05-16-22
Unlike some previous reviewers, I actually thought the organization of chapters enabled a deeper dive into specific aspects of the war such as the more obvious social and political impact, the war has on countries, advances in medicine, the development of horrific new technologies such as gas warfare or flamethrowers, the toll the war took on the soldiers on all sides to name just a few. As a result I knew exactly what lectures I wanted to listen to again.
I especially found fascinating the last two chapters.
If you are looking for an in-depth military analysis this will probably not do it for you.

Issued in London in 1917, the Balfour Declaration was one of the key documents of the 20th century. It committed Britain to supporting the establishment in Palestine of "a National Home for the Jewish people", and its reverberations continue to be felt to this day. Now the entire fascinating story of the document is revealed in this impressive work of modern history.

Exhaustingly detailed
Revisado: 02-24-22
Well written and researched. The person who read the book was outstanding. Because of the level of detail tho I think for me it would have been better to have a hard copy of the book.

Historia
In The Half Has Never Been Told, historian Edward E. Baptist reveals the alarming extent to which slavery shaped our country politically, morally, and most of all, economically. Until the Civil War, our chief form of innovation was slavery. Through forced migration and torture, slave owners extracted continual increases in efficiency from their slaves, giving the country a virtual monopoly on the production of cotton, a key raw material of the Industrial Revolution.

Sweeping and thorough history
Revisado: 01-02-21
Covers the broad sweep of slavery in this country through the use of personal narratives, legal doctrines, political papers and records. A chilling, and brutal history of the way the South fought to permanently legalize slavery. Lest one think the North was blameless, this book will dispel that myth too.
