Historia
Pillar of Light—the first volume in the series The Work and the Glory—begins the epic story of the Benjamin Steed family. In the 1820s they move from Vermont to Palmyra Township in upstate New York in search of better farmland. There they meet a young man named Joseph Smith and are thrown into the maelstrom of conflict and controversy that swirls around him. Did he really see the Father and the Son in a pillar of light? Has he truly been visited by angelic messengers? What is all this talk about gold plates and new scripture? In short, is he a prophet and seer or a monumental fraud?

Missing Sections
Revisado: 03-18-25
Somebody did a very lazy job of compiling this recording that they ripped from CDs. In some random places it will say things like, "This is the end of CD 4."
Entire sections of the book are skipped.
Fortunately for me, I was able to get a hard copy of the book and read the sections that were missing. But it is inexcusable that I had to do that.
The book itself was fantastic. But I cannot recommend this audible version.

Terrible Narration, Good Content
Revisado: 07-19-24
The content of the book is good and eye-opening. I do not recommend the audible version of this book because the author chose to have this be amateur hour in narrating the book himself. He is simply not a good narrator. The quality of the recording is very poor with all of the p sounds doing very big pops, it sounds like he recorded it with his phone or something.

This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting....

What our society needs!
Revisado: 10-10-23
Informative and helpful. I enjoyed learning more about the science of brain chemistry as it relates to pain, pleasure, and our desire to escape.
I commend the author for her vulnerability and knowledge. I would have enjoyed the book more if she had hired a narrator. Her voice got progressively weaker and annoyingly feeble.
