Historia
Grandpa and Noah are sitting on a bench in a square that keeps getting smaller every day. The square is strange but also familiar, full of the odds and ends that have made up their lives: Grandpa's work desk, the stuffed dragon that Grandpa once gave to Noah, the sweet-smelling hyacinths that Grandma loved to grow in her garden.

Med school dropout Harlan Winter returns to his impoverished West Virginia hometown, where the law is scarce, arsonists are turning everything to ash, and his family’s turbulent history lingers. Harlan’s own fears, too, when he’s hired to play detective and find a young couple gone missing.

Gratuitous violence, insipidly repetitious, ridiculous plot. I kept reading because WV (although not genuine) & I hoped for some redeeming quality. It only got worse.

Historia
On January 20, 2021, standing where only two weeks earlier police officers had battled with right-wing paramilitaries, Joe Biden took his oath of office. The American people were still sick with COVID-19, his economists were already warning him of an imminent financial crisis, and his party, the Democrats, had the barest of majorities in the Senate. Yet, faced with an unprecedented set of crises, Joe Biden decided he would not play defense. Instead, he set out to transform the nation.

Helps today’s pandemic sufferer get a grip
Revisado: 08-08-20
When so many people are writhing in angst from today’s pandemic, this tale of love (not mushy Harlequin romance type tale) in the midst of the death of bodies and souls of WWI (any war...) helps identify some of the meaning of life and sacrifice... and gives a reason for hope, meaning, and perhaps even thanksgiving.

Historia
Daniel Graham MacCormick - Mac for short - seems to have a pretty good life. At age 35 he's living in Key West, owner of a 42-foot charter fishing boat, The Maine. Mac served five years in the army as an infantry officer, with two tours in Afghanistan. He returned with the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, scars that don't tan, and a boat with a big bank loan. Truth be told, Mac's finances are more than a little shaky. One day Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar in Key West, contemplating his life....

Typical DeMille ending but ....
Revisado: 01-06-19
I really like DeMille’s books. But I’ve never read one that D-R-A-G-G-E-D like this. Most of the suspense was limited to the mulling over in Mac’s mind of possibilities that never occurred. A 60% abridgment would have done no damage to plot nor character development. Hope future DeMille reads are not nearly so b-o-r-I-n-g.

Historia
When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.

Penny is back!
Revisado: 12-28-18
I’ve read every Gamache book. The last one before this dragged and was disappointing. No, this narrator is not as good as Ralph Coshen. But few are (except George Guidall.) I almost did not buy this one after reading several negative reviews. They are IMHO wrong. The multiple layer plot is good. The character development is good. The resolution was unexpected and surely has me waiting until next autumn to see how this moves forward in the turbulent (and yet sanguine) world of the Gamache/Three Pines enterprise. And, yes, I will continue wearing the sandalwood cologne I starting wearing after about Book 3.

Historia
Present moment awareness is an essential ingredient in life if one expects to experience any degree of authentic peace and contentment. It has been acknowledged for centuries as the cornerstone of spiritual awakening in all traditions of Eastern thought. In the West, however, it is still a relatively unrecognized concept for living. The Western mind is always restless, never content with the moment.
