Historia
The winds of war grow dark around General George Meade, appointed to command the Army of the Potomac just three days before a brewing battle against Robert E. Lee, charismatic leader of the Confederate forces. No one - not even the outgoing commander - seems to know where Lee’s army is, except that they are somewhere on Northern soil, possibly pushing toward a decisive battle deep in the heart of the Union. Thwarted by insufficient intelligence and betrayed by an unscrupulous general, Meade knows it will take all his skill and the heroism of his troops to best the undefeated Lee.

This book is a novel and not a history book but I am nevertheless pleased General Meade got better treatment than he often gets.

The created dialogue of the main characters may not always be realistic but I think I got better acquainted with the actual living people.

Why I read the book?
Revisado: 02-08-23
I should say this is not my initial reading of Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings.” I was a teenager when first it came to my attention in the early 60’s and I found it a delightful read. That is why I picked up the book again for another go at it now decades later. The storyline or plot is in my mind superb. The main characters are heartwarming and for some inspirational. The presenter of this audio book did a very good job in my opinion.

Historia
The final work in this series begins in December of 1862. Four months before, the Union Army tasted long-awaited victory at the bloody battle of Antietam. Grant continued on towards Vicksburg, Mississippi. The grim battles that lay ahead would be costly: the Vicksburg campaign, Chattanooga, the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Atlanta and the March to the Sea, the siege of Petersburg. There would be two and a half more years of war before Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.

Compact and magnificent Civil War history
Revisado: 10-01-22
Bruce Catton proves he is one of our best Civil War writers by his many enduring, popular histories of 1861-65. “The Civil War” is balanced, eminently readable, refreshingly understandable, and a superior first look at this greatest of all America’s wars. I read the text in American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War in 1961 (the war’s Centennial year) and I read it again 2022.

Forgotten Korea
Revisado: 03-03-18
As J. Shaara says at the beginning of his book he tells an engaging story of death, survival, and valor of U.S. marines at Chosin Reservoir North Korea. Intensely interesting reading for a student of that conflict in November 1950.
