I've listened to this entire series, which features Dr. Vesuvia Adelia Rachel Ortiz Aguilar, a doctor for the dead. This first installment is my favorite, and I've listened to it countless times. Ariana Franklin reveals that 12th c. England and Medieval Europe was so much more diverse - races, religions, occupations, etc. - than I had imagined it to be. Admittedly, there are grisly parts in the story that aren't pleasant, but the main characters are engaging. Rosalyn Landor narrates the book beautifully.

After reading the reviews, I expected more than the book delivered. The characters seemed one-dimensional. Narration was fine.

Would you listen to America's First Daughter again? Why?

I probably will listen to it again b/c I do frequently re-listen to audiobooks. It won't be for awhile, though. I timed listening to this audiobook with a visit to Monticello and nearby Founding Fathers' plantations. This added to my enjoyment.

What was one of the most memorable moments of America's First Daughter?

When Martha and Sally stand on opposite sides of Jefferson's coffin, and then Sally gives Martha the keys to his room. The two women had a long history together, each devoted to Jefferson and his privacy but in different ways.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this audiobook. I'm a big fan of Cassandra Campbell's narrating usually; this was quite good but not one of her best. I thought that the book seemed repetitive, perhaps b/c it was in the first person and Martha was so concerned about the men in her life, her promise to her mother, and her devotion to her father; she thought through many of the same issues repeatedly.

Would you try another book from Anne Perry and/or Davina Porter?

I'll definitely listen to more books with Davina Porter as the narrator. She almost always delivers a top notch performance.

I listened to the first in this series by Anne Perry and was disappointed with it after reading so many 5-star reviews. Thought I'd give the second a try - I did and liked it even less than the first so I'm not likely to listen to another of her books.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The way that socioeconomic class is such a determining factor in almost all interactions. Also (which continues from the first book), the limitations that women faced.

The potential suspects and their families seemed one-dimensional and began to blend together.

Which scene was your favorite?

No one particular scene one stood out.

Was Callander Square worth the listening time?

No -- not for me.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Cater Street Hangman to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version.

Would you recommend The Cater Street Hangman to your friends? Why or why not?

It depends on the friend. There are other books that I'd be more likely to recommend.

Which character – as performed by Davina Porter – was your favorite?

I almost always enjoy Davina Porter's narrations and did for this book. No one specific character.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not extreme - just a sense of disappointment. I purchased it based on the many 5-star reviews but wasn't as satisfied as those listeners were. It seemed shallow and the murderer became obvious about 2/3 the way through.

I love most of SEP's books, but this is one of my favorites. Narrator Anna Fields is superb in bringing to life the teenage Lucy, the Waynes from Ft. Wayne, and the two main characters. Although I own this on cassette tape, I've wanted a copy for my iPod b/c I enjoy it so much.

This is one of my favorites. As a book, it is embedded with wonderful and varied texts that add up to "A Romance" -- narratives from the 19th century and 1980s, as well as fictional but authentic-sounding epic poems, mythology and folk stories, biographies, and letters. It includes very interesting characters, especially among the academics of the 1980s, and considers "possession" as a word and concept in fascinating ways. As an audiobook, Virginia Leishman brings everyone to life in her nuanced narration. I've listened to it many times and always find it a pleasure.

I'm not usually a fan of time travel novels but found Outlander extremely compelling. Diana Gabaldon has created two complicated and very human main characters surrounded by a wide variety of well developed supporting figures. Davina Porter narrates beautifully; she is one of my favorites.
