Good book, great performance
Revisado: 02-06-22
The Bond books are not the same as the films based on them, they are generally much better. This one is no exception. I don't want to give the details away. It's a quality espionage thriller, written at the end of the 1950s.
The celebrity readers they've gotten for the series are amazing, and Hugh Quarshie would have been an amazing choice to read the whole series.

Historia
Montague Rhodes James, the greatest English writer of ghost stories, was born in 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate, and spent most of his boyhood at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia, where his father had become Rector. From childhood he was passionately interested in mediaeval books and antiques. At the age of six, attending his first children’s party, he burst into tears, but was soon comforted by being taken into the library of the house and left there alone.

A brilliant reading
Revisado: 10-25-20
M. R. James is one of the most celebrated of early horror writers. his work is spooky and evocative, without the gore that modern authors rely on. he was a serious influence on HP Lovecraft. Geoffrey McGivern is an accomplished audio actor who should really read a lot more audio books. Highly recommended.

Another remarkabe tale of Harry Flashman, coward
Revisado: 08-07-18
Harry Flashman is the most compelling cruel coward and erstwhile adventurer. This is #4 in the series, so if you don't know the character I recommend you start with the first volume in the series.
In this book Flashman returns to the cavalry and it starts with his his service during the Crimean War, most notably his actions during the Charge of the Light Brigade. After that his adventures continue across Russia and Central Asia. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but the story is always interesting and in motion.
The book is performed by David Case, also known as Frederick Davidson, one of my favorite audiobook performers. He is extremely easy to listen to, and has a masterful approach to voice work that keeps all of the characters distinct and interesting.
If you are a fan of the Flashman Papers series already you will not regret this addition to your library, but again if you aren't familiar with the series I urge you to start with number one. It's not a requirement though, everything you need to know about the character is contained herein, and while it refers to many of the other stories in the series the adventure here is self contained enough for a newcomer to enjoy as well.

Historia
Because rivers and lakes are commonly turbid and murky, many creatures that live there are invisible to traditional wildlife film-makers. So although many people are familiar with the inhabitants of tropical reefs, and even the deep oceanic trenches, it is the water right under our noses that we know least about. And yet these creatures at the top of the freshwater food chain are every bit as spectacular—and dangerous—as those that prowl the oceans.

If you enjoy River Monsters and Jeremy Wade
Revisado: 07-02-12
Would you consider the audio edition of River Monsters to be better than the print version?
I have the print version of this book as well, and really enjoy hearing it in the author's own voice.
What other book might you compare River Monsters to and why?
In a way it reminds me of Douglas Adams' Last Chance To See, because the author is searching out examples of what often appears to be a dying breed, fish large enough to threaten a man. Because of polution and overfishing, many of these "monsters" have become quite rare.
Have you listened to any of Jeremy Wade’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
As far as I know this is his first audio-only performance, but as he narates the River Monsters television series his voice is very familiar. He is well spoken and entertaining.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, but I really enjoy his description of his life, the places he's searched out great fish, and the amazing fish themselves.
Any additional comments?
I would love to hear him narate other books, perhaps some of the books he quotes in his own work - or books by great explorers.
