Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Backstage With Meryl Streep
Revisado: 03-13-24
Loved narration by Ms. Streep! She brings intelligence, humor and natural cadences to all her readings. The novel weaves its characters lives together culminating in one summer at a repertory theater known as Tom Lake. (Not a great book title and an even worse name for a theater company). Ms. Patchett's writing is easy going down and is always surprising in its beauty and humor. The weakness of the story is a distancing I feel from her characters. I miss the gems that curiosity and a deeper exploration into the messiness of being human might bring to the reader.

Historia
Amid an opulent society living under the shadow of war are four muses, women whose bodies were shown in intimate detail, depicted by the charming yet controversial artist Egon Schiele. Adele, his passionate admirer; Gertrude, his sister who survived their blighted childhood but is jealous; his mistress Vally, a poor young woman from a bad background but with steel at her core; and the two, very different, Harms sisters, both of whom vie to become Schiele’s wife. Over the course of little more than a decade, the four women risk everything as they try to hold on to the man they adore.

it is always a great surprise to find a book about subjects I am unfamiliar with. These characters from the art world lived in or around Vienna before and during WWI. The book is a very good read that leaves you wanting to learn more about the subject.

Covid in Context
Revisado: 07-07-21
Super concise hit parade of 2020-21 dropped balls that permitted Covid to kill more than 500K (at writing) American citizens. Wright's ability to gather narratives from a national community of riveting sources brings our shared experience of the coronavirus home. It hardly seems possible that all this trauma occurred in just one year. And the story continues. If you have read his book The Looming Tower you know this man knows how to write. This is a great and eye-opening read.

Historia
In the middle of the night, a woman wakes to find her beloved city engulfed in flames. Ten seemingly endless years of conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans are over. Troy has fallen. From the Trojan women whose fates now lie in the hands of the Greeks, to the Amazon princess who fought Achilles on their behalf, to Penelope awaiting the return of Odysseus, to the three goddesses whose feud started it all, these are the stories of the women whose lives, loves, and rivalries were forever altered by this long and tragic war.

In A World...
Revisado: 06-06-21
Wow! Once I got into the groove of the telling - the stories(y) just got better and better. The Trojan War through the experiences of the women; mortals, muses, goddesses, and Gaia. It spares most of them no end of suffering and breaks others to the point vengeance and murder. Thank heavens for the perfectly placed letters from Penelope. Her wit and sense of the absurd complemented her emotionally engaging story. Every once in a long while I find a great book. Voila! Highly recommended.

Sneaks Up on You
Revisado: 12-29-19
Don't review much but want to recommend to like minded listeners. Contemporary and timeless. Unique protagonist - tough and soulful woman deprived of unconditional love; frustrating obsessive who undergoes lovely transformation. Terrific story emerges layer by layer. Clever and funny. Narration is out of this world! Finally, thought it might be a one trick pony after a couple of chapters but adamently not the case.

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Bummer
Revisado: 09-12-19
I listened again to A Handmaid's Tale before I launched into Testaments. Perhaps that was a mistake. Clare Danes read the former with intelligence and nuance. Although the narrator for Aunt Lydia was better than average the two other narrators were a train wreck. First of all I could not tell one from the other and they both sounded like squeaky teens. Ouch.
Yes, Testaments is getting rave reviews and has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize but I say, "Meh." Some interesting back story about the Aunts but the rest left me waiting for Atwood's observations, curiosity and poetry but I was eventually disappointed. Where is the personal insight about confinement, freedom, morality, sexuality and war? This is pretty much plot driven amd there isn't much of that beyond what you could put together yourself.
I have not seen the television interpretation of A Handmaid's Tale and perhaps Atwood's writing was influenced by its success. In any case I kept thinking to myself, "This is it?" Recommendation: Not so much.

Historia
This live performance of a powerful police procedural comes to life through the artistry of Celeste Lecesne and is accompanied by the original music of Duncan Sheik. Celeste portrays every character in a small Jersey Shore town as they unravel the story of Leonard Pelkey, a tenaciously optimistic and flamboyant 14-year-old boy who has gone missing. A luminous force of nature whose magic is only truly felt once he is gone, Leonard becomes an unexpected inspiration as the town’s citizens question how they live, who they love, and what they leave behind.

Really nice production values. Sounds are lush and although the balance gets out of whack a little bit this one is top notch. Cast are pros so reading/voice acting is sweet.
I really liked this mini anthology. Tasty Gothic stories that kept me ever curious. Just finished all in one listen which I do not recommend. Better to savor each one more fully. Clearly this a recommended listen especially for modern Gothic enthusiasts.

Historia
Brit is the second violinist, a beautiful and quiet orphan; the viola is Henry, a prodigy who's always had it easy; the cellist is Daniel, the oldest, the angry skeptic who sleeps around; and on first violin is Jana, their flinty, resilient leader. Together, they are the Van Ness String Quartet. In The Ensemble, each character takes the spotlight and picks up the melody, from the group's youthful rocky start through to middle age, through both devastating failures and wild success.
