Historia
Neanderthals have developed a radically different civilization on a parallel Earth. A Neanderthal physicist, Ponter Boddit, accidentally passes from his universe into a Canadian underground research facility. Fortunately, a team of human scientists, including expert paleo-anthropologist Mary Vaughan, promptly identifies and warmly receives Ponter. Solving the language problem and much else is a mini-computer, called a Companion, implanted in the brain of every Neanderthal. But it can't help his fellow scientist back in his world, Adikor Huld, when the authorities charge Adikor with his murder.

Inspiring mix of Quantum Science and fantasy
Revisado: 03-23-16
Would you listen to Hominids again? Why?
Yes, I would/will continue listening to the series. I never read the same book twice.
What did you like best about this story?
Believable story, built on a foundation of nuclear science, archaeology and fantasy, mixed with a hint of romance. Foundations of humanity and religion were clever.
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Davis and Robert J. Sawyer ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not yet.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Pretty much.

In this Hugo-nominated novel, an alien walks into a museum and asks if he can see a paleontologist. But the arachnid ET hasn't come aboard a rowboat with the Pope and Stephen Hawking (although His Holiness does request an audience later). Landing at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the spacefarer, Hollus, asks to compare notes on mass extinctions with resident dino-scientist Thomas Jericho.

Touching and inspiring
Revisado: 04-20-14
What made the experience of listening to Calculating God the most enjoyable?
The improbable setting and "Alien" stuff had me wondering in the beginning, but the story very masterfully has woven together science and religion in a both touching and inspiring journey.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Calculating God?
The ending.
Which scene was your favorite?
The gun fight.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Fascinating to reflect on the reality of travelling at or near the speed of light. in 400 years he outlived his wife and son.
Any additional comments?
Bravo

Although much is now known about the brain, relatively little has been determined about where consciousness comes from. Dr. Diane Powell, a Johns Hopkins-trained neuroscientist, has brilliantly reassessed the meaning and nature of consciousness by exploring research on the workings of psychic phenomena.

One of the few books that I will reread. So many books related to Psychic material are just anecdotal fairy tales. This nicely relates various phonomenon to related science based references.

Historia
When the skeleton of a young girl, not yet a teenager, is discovered in Acadia, Canada, Tempe Brennan is reminded of Evangelina, her best friend in her preteen years, who was mysteriously taken away when she was 12. Evangelina was from strange and faraway Acadia. She was named after Evangeline in the Longfellow poem, and loved poetry. Tempe found her exotic and glamorous, and then suddenly she was gone, and Tempe was told not to try to find her, that she was "dangerous".

Fun read related to Atlantic Canada
Revisado: 01-29-09
I was partially drawn to this book because of it's setting in Atlantic Canada, where I live. It proved to be a fun read that combined authentic Acadian history with some storytelling to create a very enjoyable read.

Historia
In this stunning audiobook, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers" - the best and the brightest, the most famous, and the most successful. He asks the question: What makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: That is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing.

Thought proviking insights to success
Revisado: 01-29-09
Although I found the first 1/3 a little slow, I really enjoyed the application of the author's insights in many anecdotes in the last 2/3. Interesting to realize that many of the one a million people are really not quite as "special" as we are accustomed to thinking.

Historia
In the midst of the Go-Go '90s, the culture of greed infused the MIT campus. A small blackjack club sprang up, dedicated to counting cards and beating the house at major casinos around the country. The Club grew slowly at first, but by the late 1990s, the right people had come up with the right system to take some of the world's most sophisticated casinos for all they were worth.

Wow what a story. I am not much of a gambler or card player, but it is a great read. Now, if only I could count cards like that, I too could be rich!

Historia
Ellen and Andy's first year of marriage doesn't just seem perfect, it is perfect. There is no question how deep their devotion is, and how naturally they bring out the best in each other. But one fateful afternoon, Ellen runs into Leo for the first time in eight years. Leo, the one who brought out the worst in her. Leo, the one who left her heartbroken with no explanation. Leo, the one she could never quite forget. When his reappearance ignites long-dormant emotions, Ellen begins to question whether the life she's living is the one she's meant to live.

America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Atlantic Canadian delight
Revisado: 06-28-07
I was pleased to find a nice summer read that seemed to be set in Atlantic Canada where I live. I was totaly drawn into the twisting story line and surprise ending. Anyone from the Halifax / Lunenburg area will enjoy hearing the names of many of our local streets, places and things placed in a well written novel.
