Historia
The story of the NR-1 is told against the tense background of the Cold War and peopled with such rich characters as the acerbic Admiral Hyman Rickover, ocean scientist Robert Ballard (who found the Titanic), the designers and builders who faced almost impossible tasks to give life to the ship, the unique officers and sailors who took the little boat down into depths on covert missions, and the families who waited for them on shore, unaware that there would be no escape if the boat ran into trouble.

Great story, narrator mispronounced some things.
Revisado: 03-10-23
I loved the story. great mix of autobiography and history all in one that I don't think I've encountered before. The only gripe that I have is some glaring mis pronunciations by the narrator that while infrequent were jarring. Like pronouncing Grumman, the manufacturer of the F14 Tomcat as grooman instead of gruhmen. only reason to downgrade from 5 stars all around.

Early in 1968, a nuclear-armed Soviet submarine sank in the waters off Hawaii, hundreds of miles closer to American shores than it should have been. Compelling evidence strongly suggests that the sub sank while attempting to fire a nuclear missile.

Historia
April 1982. Argentina invades the Falkland Islands. In response, Britain dispatches a naval Task Force. Eight thousand miles from home, its fate hinges on just 20 Sea Harrier fighters against the 200-strong might of the Argentine Air Force. Combining groundbreaking research with the pace of a thriller, Rowland White reveals the full story of the fleet's knife-edge fight for survival for the first time, and shows how the little jump jet went from airshow novelty to writing its name in aviation legend. And of how a small band of heroes won victory against impossible odds.

Informative and a good listen
Revisado: 10-29-21
Only other book I read about the Falklands war was about the Vulcan bomber involvement. this description of the tactical use of the Harriet's and the combat they flew was an interesting perspective. seeing how the Harriet's fit into the bigger picture of the British taskforce defense was an important and valuable point of emphasis in the narative.

His analysis of underwater conflict begins with Archimedes discovering the principle of buoyancy. This clandestine narrative then moves through the centuries and focuses on prolific characters with deadly motives.

Narrator needs a pronunciation guide
Revisado: 07-14-19
Overall the book focusses heavily on the 2 world wars and pre ww1 history of the submarine. post ww2, there is very little discussed. Based on other books I've read on the subject the author could have had another 5 hours at least of content on the cold war. Generally skipped over US Submarine exploits during WW2, with the exception of some highlights, but missed significant accounts found in other books.
The narrator was brilliant for most of the book, however he kept pronouncing "Leyte Gulf" as "Late Gulf". It was horribly distracting. Pronounced the city of Mobile, Alabama like "Mobile Home".

Historia
Called a great book worthy of a great man, this definitive biography of the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet in World War II is considered the best book ever written about Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Highly respected by both the civilian and naval communities, Nimitz was sometimes overshadowed by more colorful warriors in the Pacific such as MacArthur and Halsey. Potter's lively and authoritative style fleshes out Admiral Nimitz's personality to help listeners appreciate the contributions he made as the principle architect of Japan's defeat.

excellent history

only one gripe: The history flowed well except for a portion in the 1820s thru 1890s where all the technological changes were discussed. some of theseninvolved a lot of jumping backward or forwards in time.
Aside from that this was one of the most interesting books I've listened to.

long and complex but a good listen
Revisado: 12-10-16
at times it was really hard to keep track of all the names of the generals and various units involved. having watched the movie Gettysburg I had some idea about how the battle went but from a distinctly union side(20th maine). I liked how this book went into the thoughts over both sides. I really wish it had ended with the Gettysburg address by Lincoln. it would have fit well.

starts strong
Revisado: 11-11-16
the story starts in World War 1 and extensively talks about airplanes and tactics and Pilots. it then spends a lot of time in World War II and pre-World War 2 tactics and campaigns and persons. from there the remainder of the book is fragmented and very disjointed jumping around between Vietnam Middle East and finally the gulf Wars.
