Historia
Kate Schechter would like to know why everyone she meets knows her name - and why Thor, the Norse god of thunder, keeps showing up on her doorstep. Dirk Gently, detective and refrigerator wrestler, can uncover the mystery, and only the absurdist wit of Douglas Adams can recount them with such relentless humor.

Startlingly, unprovokedly excellent.
Revisado: 11-14-23
The quality is alright; the only drawback is that if you’re not of a higher mental quality than me it takes more than one listen to really settle in to appreciating the nuances.
Unlisted drawback number two is that your appreciation for the use of the English language as a weapon will skyrocket and could potentially negatively influence the timeliness of your sentence formation.
Seriously, a great listen.
Having the author expertly deliver the audio is a huge bonus, (especially as an American).

Historia
The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is a story of courage and enduring triumph, of calamity and miscalculation. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern learner can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power.

Historia
Prior to World War II, Josephine Baker was a music-hall diva renowned for her singing and dancing, her beauty and sexuality; she was the most highly paid female performer in Europe. When the Nazis seized her adopted city, Paris, she was banned from the stage, along with all "negroes and Jews". Yet, instead of returning to America, she vowed to stay and to fight the Nazi evil. Overnight she went from performer to Resistance spy. In Agent Josephine best-selling author Damien Lewis uncovers this little known history of the famous singer's life.

Such a fascinating book!
Revisado: 12-02-22
The author does a tremendous job of portraying the character and nature of the real life heroine. As I think he says, if this were a novel many of the details would add up to be a little much but as a true story it is intensely interesting and Josephine Baker is about as inspiring as humans get.
My only negative note on the author’s narration is that I don’t like the voices he does for characters; however I am particularly sensitive to ANY narrator doing voices and I bet loads of listeners have no problem with any of it. Overall I’m still very glad the author read his own work.
I cannot recommend this book (and audible audiobook) highly enough. I’m a relative newcomer to WW2 history and the backdrop of the French perspective in itself made this a very memorable listen. I will definitely revisit it.

Focused presentation, excellent narrator
Revisado: 12-16-21
This book is so well written; it goes far enough into the weeds to illuminate this difficult subject but stays expertly accessible.
The narrator is the voice of the YouTube channel for a reason it would seem and makes the audiobook a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Powerful window into deep human wisdom. Perfect narrator.
Revisado: 12-16-21
This book first of all is made so perfect by the author’s narration; his voice being his own he of course nails the tone of the story and the Lakota pronunciation but he also has truly world class delivery.
The content is an inspiring blend of old stories, modern perspective and the author’s family history as well as that of his people. I don’t know how to phrase it better but I do know that the word “inspiring” even feels cheap to connect to this document. I feel like an old man invited me to share a cup of tea by a fire, told me he was a medicine man and that he had an hours-long story to tell me. And then somewhere in the middle revealed himself to be my own grandfather. Humility and generosity, among many other virtues, are illuminated with a bright clear light.
In addition the history from the Lakota perspective is invaluable, and presented fairly and succinctly. Can’t recommend the book highly enough.

Historia
An honest tour of the Vietnam War from the soldier's eye view... Nam-Sense is the brilliantly written story of a combat squad leader in the 101st Airborne Division. Arthur Wiknik was a 19-year-old kid from New England when he was drafted into the US Army in 1968. After completing various NCO training programs, he was promoted to sergeant "without ever setting foot in a combat zone" and sent to Vietnam in early 1969. Shortly after his arrival on the far side of the world, Wiknik was assigned to Camp Evans, a mixed-unit base camp near the Northern village of Phong Dien.

Great book, irritating narrator
Revisado: 10-18-21
Really enjoyed the author’s perspective and the layout of the book. It was honest and as light-hearted as possible considering how serious the subject matter is. The narrator has a good reading voice but I found his use of a unique voice for every person that speaks distracting in the best instances and borderline infuriating in many others. I’d still recommend the book overall and of course I’m sure some folks enjoy the voices.
