Historia
Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Missed Opportunities
Revisado: 02-07-23
So often as I listened I thought, “now…now is when the story starts again, game style”, and it doesn’t. Not ever. And maybe that’s what the author intended, that real life doesn’t ever start over, but I wanted it for this story. As a result I felt unfulfilled. The narrator was lovely and made the mostly unlikable Sadie a mostly sympathetic character.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Heartbreaking and hopeful!

Demon is such an endearing character! Worth following through the bad times, and man, some of them are bad. A unique perspective of the opioid epidemic.

Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. But by the time she retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Grand Slam titles. And if you ask Carrie, she is entitled to every one. I never knew I loved tennis!
Revisado: 10-18-22
But I do love books by Taylor Jenkins Reid! Fast paced, nods to other books, an ending that while not unexpected, still brought a tear. 🧡

Ancestry, mystery and grief
Revisado: 10-03-20
This book was recommended to me by a friend who knows I’m interested in ancestral research and I am so grateful! The cover is a bit of a mismatch with my typical choices so I was hesitant, but I’m so glad I gave it a try. It is a step by step mystery discovering the roots a genetically transmitted disease as revealed through ancestry and family secrets. Plus it’s a love story, and a story about the meaning of family, and of grief. The narrator is fantastic! I shed a few sad and a few hopeful tears, some of which are still falling as i type this. Recommend!

So many feels in this story!!
Revisado: 09-07-20
Five heartbreaking yet hopeful stories told by five different narrators...it's hard to say which story was my favorite because they all tied together so beautifully. I cried several times because the sadness and joy in the lives of these women resonated with me on many levels. At times when the narrators changed it would take me maybe a second or two to get my bearings...but stick with it because when each story-thread ends it's oh, so satisfying!

Historia
Juliet is failing to juggle motherhood and her stalled-out dissertation on confessional poetry when her husband, Michael, informs her that he wants to leave his job and buy a sailboat. With their two kids - Sybil, age seven, and George, age two - Juliet and Michael set off for Panama, where their 44 foot sailboat awaits them. The initial result is transformative; the marriage is given a gust of energy, Juliet emerges from her depression, and the children quickly embrace the joys of being feral children at sea.

Historia
Birdie, a young woman born into wealth, has a deep passion for art and science which leads her to a position painting landscape habitats at the new Museum of Natural History. Her mother sees this pursuit as a distraction from her daughter’s obligatory society functions and tries to forbid her from the museum, but Birdie’s dedication only grows once she meets Jay, an intelligent Irishman who’s yanked himself up by his bootstraps to join the Museum’s elite team of researchers. Captivated by each other despite their differences, Birdie and Jay steal away to Central Park each day.

The perfect historical fiction love story!
Revisado: 03-23-20
Birdie and Jay is a vivid portrayal of the frivolity of the Gilded Age coupled with the fervor found during the era of the hunt for dinosaurs and of Charles Darwin and emerging evolutionary theories. Both narrators were fabulous, bringing both Birdie and Jay, and their love story, to life. Required for historical fiction and historical romance fans. Think Outlander for the Gilded Age.
