Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Unknown and powerful story not to be missed
Revisado: 07-25-22
I am so grateful to the author for this fantastic and informative history weaving together so many lives. The sad legacy of slavery took so many forms and ruined so many lives and communities. This book elevates the bravery of many people who changed the tide through their courage and sacrifice. I am inspired by the power of individual moral commitments and now so much better informed about how we ever got to the landmark Brown decision. Bravo! A great book and great listen.

Smart, humorous, and strikingly original essays by one of “America’s most bracing thinkers on race, gender, and capitalism of our time.” (Rebecca Traister) In these eight piercing explorations on beauty, media, money, and more, Tressie McMillan Cottom - award-winning professor and acclaimed author of Lower Ed - embraces her venerated role as a purveyor of wit, wisdom, and Black Twitter snark about all that is right and much that is wrong with this thing we call society.

Piercing, challenging, amusing
Revisado: 07-31-20
How can a modern intellectual conceive, write, and deliver such penetrating, painfully accurate, and entertaining analysis of our contemporary life? I don't know - but Dr. McMillan Cottom has done it. From the moment I began listening to this book, I've recommended it to others at least once every day. I feel enriched, challenged, and inspired by her work - and will never read the opinion pages of the NYT again in quite the same way. In fact, I will join in agitating for more black female voices there and elsewhere.
Thank you, Dr. Cottom, for making this your "third job" - for taking whatever crap the world throws at you from whatever directions for your bravery and insight, and for inviting us all into your life experience in a deeply personal and seriously intellectual way.

Revisado: 01-31-20
I am from the Midwest (not Minnesota, although I have plenty of family there) and, after 40 years in Virginia, felt like I had come home to listen to this book. Totally MUST listen to this - the reader has NAILED the Minnesota accent, and the whole world view is so spot on. I laughed out loud and my heart was warmed. GREAT book.

Important and compelling
Revisado: 07-05-18
This book introduces great depth and dimension to the lives of Two pioneers for women’s rights and the quality of their lives. While thoroughly describing the lives of women in the 18th and 19th centuries through the stories of Mary Wolstonecraft and Mary Shelly, the author also traces and honors a mother’s legacy living in her daughter. What an eye opener and heart warmer. An essential read for those interested in early feminist literature
