fairly satisfying conclusion to Jane Eyre
Revisado: 02-18-24
I found the story mainly plausible, with a few unlikely elements. It's certainly was interesting to consider the future of Jane and Edward. The ending was fairly satisfying.
unfortunately I felt that the narrators performance was not the best. when Adele spoke I felt like it couldn't be her voice, and the attempts to speak as a male, unfortunately made her sound like an old lady.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

classic tale of a truly strong heroine
Revisado: 02-07-24
I've read the story at least two or three times, but in listening to it I have noticed different details. Modern critics will find fault with Jane's character, but starting as a girl in her aunt's house, she exhibits strength of mind, and determination to do what is right.
Today we don't expect love to be enduring and sacrificial, but hers is. The age difference should not automatically indicate a fault with the relationship. Jane is sensible, and takes her time with decisions. She is sensitive and slowly grows to care for her employer.
Spoiler: by leaving him to preserve her own dignity, she empowers him to grow beyond what he thought possible. He valiantly tries to save the person he most wishes away. His bravery results in damage to his physical person, but his soul turns to God. Jane also has an opportunity to follow a different person's leaning, but sees rightly that a marriage to him would be no truer than the marriage to Rochester.
A very satisfying ending concludes the story.
Thandie Newton's performance is amazing. One voice and yet she brings to life many characters.

Historia
Booker T. Washington fought his way out of slavery to become an educator, statesman, political shaper, and proponent of the "do-it-yourself" idea. In his autobiography, he describes his early life as a slave on a Virginia plantation, his steady rise during the Civil War, his struggle for education, his schooling at the Hampton Institute, and his years as founder and president of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, which was devoted to helping minorities learn useful, marketable skills.

Applies to today

As an educator myself, I wish that today's schools used some of Washington's practical methods. The value of work increases the usefulness of academic learning.

Very interesting historic and contemporary plot woven together.
Revisado: 12-21-23
The historical part of the story was well written and riveting. like any good story from the world war II era, it touched the heart strings and made me admire the heroic nature of the leading character.
The contemporary portion seemed a little hokey at times and the love story a little over the top. Juliet had some growth moments, but occasionally slipped back.
overall a very satisfying read.

great potential but overall frustrating
Revisado: 08-22-23
Although I didn't think the topic would be interesting, it could have been.
the author seems to repeat both portions of the narrative and its themes.
It seems like the author could have showed more progress in Claire's thinking and decision making throughout the book, instead of coming to an abrupt decision at the end, that was anti-climactic. We also could have learned more about the supporting characters in those middle chapters where nothing much was going on.
The final chapter was the most satisfying, but too little too late.
