Start with Level 5 by the same author. Both are killer hard sci-fi techno-thrillers!!!

Possible Partial Spoiler: Richard Phillips has done a great deed for the world of sci-fi by creating this incredibly well-crafted plot that at first seems like a teen drama, but once the listener has all the pieces of the puzzle starting to fit into place, it is most certainly not a teenage drama. Not very many teens will understand all of the science that is mentioned in this, so I believe it's geared toward the typical 18-45 sci-fi crowd, no matter the gender. Once the sorry gets rolling, it evolves into (mostly) hard science fiction thriller that keeps you listening until the wee hours.

Macleod Andrews is hands-down the best narrator on the planet for this type of audiobooks, hell any type of audiobook really. I have, lately, found myself searching for any and all sci-fi books he has narrated because, honestly, every time I try to listen to anyone else's narration. Yes there are a few narrators that do a great job, but they are very hard to find, especially one that can drive the dynamics of a book to a point where the listener is fully immersed in the audiobook so fully that they forget they're even listening to someone read.

It's like listening to a nine or ten hours movie where the characters come alive in a way that I truly never thought possible with a narrated audiobook. Some narrators just don't have the chops (yet) to do the type of character distinction using accents like Andrews does. I haven't heard an dialect yet that he isn't able to read in English using the accent with a spot-on accuracy that doesn't seem faked. Russian, German, Irish, British, Swedish, Arabic, Chinese, Columbian, Mexican, Brazilian, Australian, American (all different accents), Cuban.

When you can tell the difference between someone reading text in English with a Columbian and a Mexican accent, that's impressive.

It helps the listener keep track of who's speaking at any given moment in the story and really compliments well the outstanding writing by Richard Phillips, a former Army Ranger with a Master's in Nuclear Physics and some computer science background that has enabled him to create strikingly detailed situations where the story is fiction but it's incredibly believable and fight scenes that pop like a Jackie Chan movie. I've never listened to it read a book before where a fight scene had my heart racing and where the actions of the combatants were so believably realistic and accurate to how someone with that amount of skill would perform.

If you are a sci-fi fan and you *don't* listen to these 9 audiobooks (which are read and listen for free if you have Kindle Unlimited and Audible), then you are just being stubborn and well...dumb.

narrator almost as good as MacLeod Andrews and that is a very good compliment coming from me because he is my favorite narrator of all time across any genre. I have listened to five books in a row and I'm not tired of his voice or performances which is a tremendous feat from any narrator. sorry for terrible punctuation I'm using voice typing to write this

Carl Sagan was a genius in many rights, and this novel is just one more example of that genius. I could go on for hours about his eloquence in writing and scientific understanding.

* Narrator Laurel Lefkoe started out just beautifully, but she seemed to get a bad cold about 8 chapters in and became almost annoying to listen to bc of the nasally, sickly sounding voice. Finally about 6 chapters into the sickness it seems to wane, but many times after the cold seems to get better, you can still hear her jockeying a cough drop around in her mouth (note to narrators: use a piece of a cough drop, not the whole damn thing... ugh), which is really irritating when she normally speaks so clearly and distinctly.

Also, there were times where a random sentence or word had been dubbed in by a man pretending to sound like a woman narrating in a man's voice. Attempting too explain this phenomenon was *almost* as complicated as explaining the Einstein-Rosen tube theory to a 7 year old.

I honestly think had it not been for those issues with the narration, it would've been one of the best I've ever heard, especially considering all the amazingly complex scientific terminology and Russian, Chinese, and other names that were almost impossible to pronounce, coupled with the fact that she's narrating a Carl Sagan book which is written with the vocabulary of the dean of the English department at Oxford or Cambridge. I very rarely have to look up the definition of words in a book or audiobook, but I must admit I had to break out the ol' Google machine a few times throughout this one.

If you found this review helpful please let me know by tapping or clicking the button below that says "helpful," which you must admit could be construed as helpful in and of itself. So, throw me a frickin bone here why doncha!?!

Story was definitely geared towards young teens, mature children. I would say 9-16. A lot of the story required a suspension of logic and reality of situations involving children, but overall it was pretty good. The narration sealed the deal for me. Andrews is the best out there. This guy deserves an award and a sizeable bonus.
