Better than I could imagine!
Revisado: 02-27-25
At first I wasn’t sure about this book. It was in my library for a long time.
I finally listened to it this week.
It is a story of the growing up of a young black girl in the segregated south, but it is really a story of love and belief. I thought I might be too old for this story but I was wrong.
As a senior aged white woman I learned a lot about the thoughts black people about white words and behavior. I wish white and black could be more honest and open about their feelings but it is clearly hard.
I cried in the closing chapters of the book. It is beautiful.

Historia
In the early morning of June 1, 1921, a White mob marched across the train tracks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and into its predominantly Black Greenwood District - a thriving, affluent neighborhood known as America's Black Wall Street. They brought with them firearms, gasoline, and explosives. In a few short hours, they'd razed 35 square blocks to the ground, leaving hundreds dead. The Tulsa Race Massacre is one of the most devastating acts of racial violence in US history. But how did it come to pass?

Truth can be hard to hear
Revisado: 02-25-24
I started to listen to this and thought “this is too heavy for me to hear while I’m working “ but I kept on.
It is so well written that it flows on and takes you along. The narrators voice is calm and easy to listen to.
I do love history and this is done in depth. Sometime it is confusing but not often. It was well worth my time and I am better informed having read it.

Sherman Holmes has officially settled into his new city, and the World's Greatest Detective Agency has opened its doors. Now, the new duo must investigate a local "haunted" tourist site where the scares are going off-script and otherworldly interference is suspected.

I listened to the whole book but halfway through I realized if I slowed down the narrator just 1 notch I would enjoy it more. I did. I recommend adjusting the speed of the narrator and then just go with the flow. There is humor and technology and crazy character melted into one.

Interesting characters but
Revisado: 08-18-22
If you love this writer you may love this book. I was about to stop listening after I was 1/2 way through. It is a slice of life that goes no where. Perhaps it was too slow for me.
I also found the recording picked up the narrators mouth sounds. The timing between “chapters” was odd. I did get used to it.
I won’t read more of this series even though the prose is great.

A nail biter to the end
Revisado: 07-01-22
The story is complex. It is a complex story of personalities and control. It does jump from past to present and back and from many points o view but that is all easy to follow.
The performance is great with each character voiced with clarity and variety.
At first, I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue but it drew me in to the web of relationships. A good listen.

A blend of spy novel and personal interaction
Revisado: 05-16-22
At first, I thought, “Oh no, not another time jumping style of story telling”. It was, but not so much that I couldn’t follow it. The stories weave in and out of WW2 and the present.
I enjoyed the character development. It is not so much about action as it is about using your wits. A pleasant ride.

Then Joanna is woken in the middle of the night by a call reporting a motor vehicle accident. Her mother and stepfather's RV ran off the road at high speed and hit the pillar of an overpass. Something about the accident seems suspicious, though, and when Joanna gets a call from Ali Reynolds, a journalist turned investigator, she accepts her offer to help.

2 very personal stories for Joanna Brady
Revisado: 04-25-22
I enjoyed these 2 stories as they are well developed and complex, but I agree with another reviewer who said Random Acts should be heard before Downfall. If you go to the end of chapter 47 (which shows up as 48) at 2 hours and 11 minutes, you can listen to Random Acts first.
It’s ok out of order but I leave it to you. These are both much more likely to bring tears to your eyes. Enjoy.

Too long and too short
Revisado: 12-14-21
It was a joy to listen to another tale from Three Pines with all the characters. I thought I had read the last one but not so.
While I wanted to get to the end of the mystery, I wanted to prolong my visit. The fact that this was set in the current work of post pandemic life added to the familiarity. Louise Penny confronts many issues of our political world in the context of story telling. Can we not get everyone to read this?
