Historia
In the wake of a humbling incident aboard a canal boat in the Cotswolds, young Captain Horatio Hornblower arrives in London to take command of the Atropos, a 22-gun sloop barely large enough to require a captain. Her first assignment under Hornblower's command is as flagship for the funeral procession of Lord Nelson.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 11-22-23
The narration is often detached, sometimes whispered, sometimes sing song, and nearly always annoying. It’s a shame, because this is a classic Hornblower story that deserved better.

Rise and Fall holds up 60 + years later
Revisado: 06-10-22
I first read this compelling and detailed history as a young teenager, and I read it a second time 30 years later. Listening to Grover Gardeners excellent narration after another three decades, I’m struck at how relevant it remains for a modern reader; a warning that one man can lead millions into disgrace and inflict horror and misery on millions more.

Historia
Nigel Hamilton's Mantle of Command, long-listed for the National Book Award, drew on years of archival research and interviews to portray FDR in a tight close-up as he determined Allied strategy in the crucial initial phases of World War II. Commander in Chief reveals the astonishing sequel - suppressed by Winston Churchill in his memoirs - of Roosevelt's battles with Churchill to maintain that strategy.

Irritating narration
Revisado: 04-20-17
Having enjoyed a different narrator's style in book one of the trilogy, I was startled, then annoyed by the sing song, breathlessly urgent narration of this volume. It greatly detracted from my enjoyment of an otherwise excellent book.
