Historia
In Peter Beinart’s view, one story dominates Jewish communal life: that of persecution and victimhood. It is a story that erases much of the nuance of Jewish religious tradition and warps our understanding of Israel and Palestine. After Gaza, where Jewish texts, history, and language have been deployed to justify mass slaughter and starvation, Beinart argues, Jews must tell a new story. After this war, whose horror will echo for generations, they must do nothing less than offer a new answer to the question: What does it mean to be a Jew?

Not much to this book to capture a reader’s interest… perhaps a less pompous reader would have helped… let’s wait for the movie… hahaha

Historia
A thirty-four-year-old American woman—a secret agent—is sent to do dirty work in France. “Sadie Smith” is how the narrator introduces herself to her lover, to the rural commune of French subversives on whom she is keeping tabs, and to the reader. Sadie has met her love, Lucien, a young and well-born Parisian, by “cold bump”—making him believe the encounter was accidental. Like everyone Sadie targets, Lucien is useful to her and used by her. Sadie operates by strategy and dissimulation, based on what her “contacts”—shadowy figures in business and government—instruct.

Little things, like loss, love, a world war, and a hunger that has eaten at him since he was a Black boy on his own.

Old News...er, old boring news
Revisado: 11-13-24
...and to think, the author sells this same, self-hating, dated, pseudo-hero character, as ignorant a RACIST in his own right, in a story so hackneyed it reaches to the dead land so far beyond boring there is no light there, sell this meritless formula over and over as if he's offering anything to the reader or listener. Shame on him; shame on audible; shame on us.

BRILLIANT IN CONCEPT, WRITING, NARRATION
Revisado: 10-30-24
As always, Ms Atkinson starts slowly, placing pieces on the board as if she is playing Go, and builds up both puzzlement and steam until she amazes with her ability to see far into the future and with remarkable insight, ties it all together, for an entirely be-here-now finale...this is true of her themes as well as her characters...Brodie is not the centerpiece here but is a remarkable character around which to weave still another deep story...thank you Ms Atkinson!
