Historia
Two words: the bullet. That's all it takes to shatter her life. Caroline Cashion is beautiful, intelligent, a professor of French literature. But in a split second, everything she's known is proved to be a lie. A single bullet, gracefully tapered at one end, is found lodged at the base of her skull. Caroline is stunned. It makes no sense: She has never been shot. She has no entry wound, no scar. Then, over the course of one awful evening, she learns the truth.

Entertaining enough
Revisado: 12-23-21
I always wince when a female protagonist, who's set up to be a smart logical character, makes really dumb decisions. I lose faith in the book then.

Unlikable boring protagonist
Revisado: 09-12-21
The protagonist has such poor judgement she's unlikable. By the end of the book, I liked her less than at the start. I just groaned at each decision. The childhood reasons for Lucy's gullibleness didn't wash. At all. And the side story about the father didn't ring true either--tortured plot device to give the husband some mystery. I usually like this author, but this effort was a complete miss.

Tony Stark meets James Bond
Revisado: 04-24-20
...in a cartoon strip. Kept on thinking this kind of stereotyped wholesome hero and his coterie might do better in a graphical novel. The story moved along but I had trouble caring given the predictability of the characters. Vanilla and over the top at once. Narrator does voices well but one black sidekick (stereotype!) characterization was especially cringeworthy.

Better read than listen?
Revisado: 03-18-20
Couldn’t get past the narration. The narrator has a good voice, but just couldn’t seem to pull off the inflections and attitude many of the accents required. Southern accents ok, but that wasn’t a French accent, dude. Would have preferred listening to just straight narration. It all went too cheesy too fast.

Lame and embarrassing
Revisado: 11-09-19
Sloppily written with lazy word choices and cliche characters who behave gratuitously throughout the book. The writing was so bad, it was laughable. A loner who finds his gifts are with guns ends up in an ambush with a mercenary and takes advantage of him by grabbing for his crotch--fair enough--except the author chooses to use the word "manhood," and, in fact, uses that term several times throughout the novel. The story is a masculine thrill ride and the protagonist is grabbing other men's manhood? I wasn't expecting to enter the world of bodice-ripper. I would be embarrassed for the author if I didn't feel so scammed.
The narrator didn't have much to work with. The production was also bad--passages repeated multiple times. Money back, please.

Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Loved the storyline and characters
Revisado: 11-08-19
Fun, flawed, interesting characters and a storyline told told with wit, clever observations, and some great turns of phrases. It's enough to make me want to read the next in the series but I will say this: The author's choice of cutting back and forth between scenes, even before we begin to get some context, wreaked havoc with my sense-making brain cells. I struggled until about 1/3 of the way into the book. Finally did adapt to the author's style, but it does take some effort. I think the quick changes wouldn't be as taxing in hardcopy format. With audio--not so much.
I really like Doyle's narration. That wasn't the problem for me.
All in all, a win. I could visualize the characters and really got a kick out of them. Herron paints pictures well with an economy of words, unlike my review. Hoping the next book doesn't have so many quick scene changes.

Killer's motive confusing
Revisado: 08-24-19
The book wrapped up so fast, it didn't fully explain the mind of the killer--or if it did, I didn't buy it. I can't say any more without spoiling it, but one of the victims just didn't make sense, given the killer's emotions. Saw lots of reviews reporting that the protagonist was unlikable. I can see that, Other books have had unlikable leads that were less jarring to a reader's sensability. That said, what really bothered me with this book, was the denouement. It just didn't add up.

Compelling story and characters, great dialog
Revisado: 03-23-19
The dialog was a driving force in this story--really enjoyed it.
The narrator is one of the best I've listened to. I'll keep watching for him.
Plot timeline was confusing. Just as one storyline got going, it switched to another time in the characters' lives and it was hard to keep the picture clear. I don't mind timeline switching, but in this book there was just a little too much of it. For me, anyway.

A mother who loves her kids
Revisado: 12-30-17
Done in pieces as per title, what really came through was Poundstone's absolute love and devotion to her kids. And her common sense. Lucky kids--problem is, that doesn't always make for engaging reading. Too much samey same. But I really did like the piece about her nursing home visits.

A sendup of life on earth, replete with characters we've all met before, but this time in the bodies of the most unusual choices for animals. The narration was a home run. All in all, just a very fun, uplifting read.
