Historia
Eighteen years ago, teenage Amy fled England, pregnant and heartbroken, to start over in New Zealand with her parents. Now Chris, the love she left behind, has walked into her beloved café by the beach and thrown her life into turmoil. As far as Amy’s concerned, Chris chose to ignore the child she was carrying when they last met. She brought up their daughter alone and created a happy home for them both on the other side of the world. But with Chris suddenly back in her life, she can no longer ignore the past and begins to wonder what really happened all those years ago.

Main Character is Tedious
Revisado: 10-16-24
Amy, the main character in this book, seems horribly stuck in her teenage mindset, though she is now approaching middle age. Repeatedly throughout the book when she is presented with options that would indicate to most adults to reconsider her thinking, she stubbornly refuses to inwardly reflect or otherwise change her behavior. This is most of the book, until the last couple of chapters, when finally others in Amy's life tell her to stop making things up in her head and go consult the people who would know. This was as an infernally frustrating read.

Historia
Hazel Sinnett is alone and half-convinced the events of the year before—the immortality, Beecham’s vial—were a figment of her imagination. She doesn’t even know if Jack is alive or dead. All she can really do now is treat patients and maintain Hawthornden Castle as it starts to decay around her. When saving a life leads to her arrest, Hazel seems doomed to rot in prison until a message intervenes: Hazel has been specifically requested to be the personal physician of Princess Charlotte, the sickly granddaughter of King George III.

Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

I hope there is a sequel coming! Great characters and a true delight for lovers of language. Does a wonderful job of showing the personal toll, gray areas, profit, and suffering brought about by empire.

Historia
Hazel Sinnett is a lady who wants to be a surgeon more than she wants to marry. Jack Currer is a resurrection man who’s just trying to survive in a city where it’s too easy to die. When the two of them have a chance encounter outside the Edinburgh Anatomist’s Society, Hazel thinks nothing of it at first. But after she gets kicked out of renowned surgeon Dr. Beecham’s lectures for being the wrong gender, she realizes that her new acquaintance might be more helpful than she first thought.

Love the podcast, love the book!

I have been a fan of Noble Blood for some time and was excited for Dana Schwartz's first book. It did not disappoint. A great period piece with the right mix of historical detail, love, and mystery. Excited to read the next book!

Historia
Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

If it had been better edited...
Revisado: 06-16-22
I think what this book could have benefitted from was better editing. The core of the story is fairly good. However, the main character is depicted as at times enlightened and then goes on to undermine herself repeatedly. You start to get the feeling that she never learns. When the story finally concludes, you're happy for the characters, but there could have been a much better and more interesting route they could have taken. Overall, it feels like reading a first or second draft, so it's tedious and a bit disappointing. Still enough there, though, to hang on the end.
