A New Memoir Favorite
Revisado: 03-10-23
Wow! I originally picked up this title because I needed an "easy listen" in the background while working. What I didn't expect was to be so sucked into the story that I found myself more distracted in my work. But that didn't matter. The make of a good memoir, for me, is the narration by the author. Alison's honesty, clarity, and approach to handling life's heartaches resonated with me. Thank you for sharing your story...thank you for being an advocate. Not all of us who suffered abuse were seen and heard...you have made a difference!

She writes beautifully about growing up amid the natural wonders of Alaska, about pain and childhood trauma, and about discovering her own identity years after the entire world had discovered the beauty of her songs.

My New Favorite Memoir
Revisado: 09-10-20
Occasionally, you pick up a book unsure if it will be “your thing” then realize hours later you were sucked in, hooked, already part of the story. Jewel’s memoir was just that. I grabbed the audiobook version on a whim and turned it on while working. I kept thinking about the story when I was pulled away until I could return and immerse myself in her story once again.
I remember when she gained popularity with her music, and while I enjoyed it, I can’t help but feel a further affinity for it now that I’ve had a glimpse into her journey.
Reading this, she strikes me as someone who would “get me”...who would be an amazing friend with a steady spirit and open heart. Listening to her tell her story made her feel like a kindred spirit.

A Tragic Story of Love and Triumph
Revisado: 08-25-20
I originally picked up this title with the impression it was a memoir, but I quickly realized it was fictional. I found myself drawn into the story watching the young girl grow into woman struggling to survive in a harsh landscape with a codependent mother and an abusive, alcoholic father. She steadfastly retains her love for Alaska and the people of her town despite her struggles.
The love story interwoven with the boy who wins her heart is both sadness and hope. With a slight air of the tragedy of Wuthering Heights, I wasn't left disappointed by the end. I highly recommend this book if you love stories about the struggle from childhood to overcoming childhood and becoming a successful adult despite obstacles.

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Carey and six-year-old Jenessa have been living in the woods with their mother for as long as they can remember; the sheltering trees and a broken-down camper are all they know. But what they’ve never been told is that Carey vanished from the real world ten years ago, when their mother took her, causing an uproar in the media - and in her father’s life.

The gentle cadence of Carey's voice in the audiobook version took me to the 100 Acre Woods where she and her sister survived a life children are never meant to live. It captured me and took me through their story with emotions ranging from sadness and fear to hope and finally a feeling of belonging. I highly recommend this book...these charactesr...this journey...

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

A Mountain of Strength
Revisado: 01-16-19
After reading T W Neal’s Freckled then Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle, Educated was a natural transition. This story of perseverance, determination, and healing held me from beginning to end. The ending, for me, was the most important. Self-awareness and acceptance are key to a healthy mentality. Whether or not Tara sees her own courage, millions of others found strength to accept their own childhoods as they read her story. Not all can share their stories, but there is something so valuable in reading about those who can.

A MUST have in all formats!
Revisado: 10-11-16
Would you listen to Order of Seven again? Why?
Beth Teliho captured my imagination with Order of Seven! The various cultures, the links between past and present, and the native legends all created a story that called me back until I finished the last page. I love a story that sparks my imagination, leads me away from the monotony of daily life, and takes me on an adventure. Order of Seven did just that!
I couldn't typecast this book into one genre because it offers a fantastic bit of many things in order to give you something to sink your teeth into and think about. I love a book that is multi-faceted!
The actor reading Devi's part was SPOT ON!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Absolutely riveted.
Any additional comments?
I was excited to read the Epilogue and look forward to reading what Beth has to share with us in the future, so I'll be keeping an eye out for the next available preorder!

The Curse Keepers is a story that I've revisited three times now. Every time I read or listen, I feel as though I glean a new aspect of the story. This makes my second time finishing the audio book. It won't be my last!
No story Denise Grover Swank writes will leave you disappointed. In fact, you'll finish so quickly you can't wait for the next!
