Historia
Byzantium is too-often considered merely the "eastern rump" of the old Roman Empire, a curious and even unsettling mix of the classical and medieval. Yet it was, according to Professor Harl, "without a doubt the greatest state in Christendom through much of the Middle Ages," and well worth our attention as a way to widen our perspective on everything from the decline of imperial Rome to the rise of the Renaissance.

Great Prof / ends rather abruptly
Revisado: 03-14-23
In other reviews the only negative points I see is the style of Prof. Harl. I couldn't disagree more. The Great Courses promises university-level lectures, and boy, does Prof. Harl deliver. Getting 1000 years into 24 lectures takes some doing. Being able to entertain, share interesting anecdotes and make the occasional joke while doing so is next level.
If Prof. Harl's courses have taught me anything, it is that history is very interconnected, both geographically and in time. It would have been very interesting for me to have a final lecture going into the aftermath of the Byzantine empire, similar to how he opened with a very brief overview of the events leading up to the founding of Constantinople. However, I get that space is limited, and that I probably need to do a course on the Ottoman Empire for that.

Historia
If a mere seven more MPs had voted with Prime Minister JBM Hertzog in favour of neutrality, South Africa's history would have been quite different. Parliament's narrow decision to go to war in 1939 led to a seismic upheaval throughout the 1940s: black people streamed in their thousands from rural areas to the cities in search of jobs; volunteers of all races answered the call to go 'up north' to fight; and opponents of the Smuts government actively hindered the war effort by attacking soldiers and committing acts of sabotage.

Not as good as Steyn's other work
Revisado: 03-01-21
Although very interesting and wide-ranging, at times at felt as if the author gave agency to the action of going to war, where his own facts suggest more that it just happened to occur while the war and it's consequences were also playing out.
The performer mispronounced some names that he himself pronounced correctly in Steyn's book on Smuts.

Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

An interesting topic, especially given the current pandemic. Puts things in perspective. Professor Armstrong is simply awesome

Best Reader ever
Revisado: 10-09-17
The story itself is extremely witty, and deserves its status as a classic fully.
The reader brought the story to life. Every character had a different voice and accent, bringing the characters to life. This was the first time that an audiobook was actually better than reading the book myself.

Innovative "biography"
Revisado: 06-12-17
Extremely interesting history of the digital innovation. A nice change from the almost cult status some individuals have in Silicone Valley, this book describes the unsung heroes without which the Gates' and Jobs' of the world would not be possible.

Excellent presentation and story. I hope this is turned into a full length book, because the only negative thing I can say is that I am left wanting so much more.
