Historia
Charlotte Anne Mattas longs to turn back the clock. Before her husband, Sam, went to serve his country in the war, he was the man everyone could rely on—responsible, intelligent, and loving. But the person who's come back to their family farm is very different from the protector Annie remembers. Sam's experience in the Pacific theater has left him broken in ways no one can understand—but that everyone is learning to fear.

I like being surprised, but too often I can guess an ending. Not this time! The few bits I guessed were for reasons different than I’d assumed. The writing is sharp, characters are lovable (or punchable), and above all the book made me FEEL. Genius. Can’t wait to read her newest one.

Historia
Nestled in a mountain haven, the remaining people of the world live in a village that is ordinary but strict. A severe peace must be kept severely, as they say. It's all that keeps them from descending into the chaos that claimed the world 100 years ago. Led by the Prophet Valdas and his Regents, the villagers work, play, marry, and have families. They gather in ceremony once a year to celebrate their Day of Remembrance. Life is planned, precise, and predictable, until the special abilities of 11-year-old Andrius threaten to undermine it all.

I Wanted to Punch People
Revisado: 07-25-24
Weird or not, I gauge great writing by the depth of my desire to punch the villain(s) or spend more time with the protagonist. FWtSS accomplished both.
Premise: genius
Audio: occasionally glitchy
Narration: excellent
Characters: fantastic
Voices: unique and distinct
Usually I can count on one hand the books I consider worth multiple re-reads. Now I’ll have to use two hands.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Love the team-up. Wil delivers John’s words to perfection. Maybe it’s brain candy, but it’s GOOD candy. Just watch out for the blue ones. 😉

Historia
Goldengrove’s towers and twisted chimneys rose at the very edge of the peaceful Weald, a stone’s throw from the poisonous marshes and merciless waters of Rye Bay. Young Tabby Palethorp had been running wild there, ever since her mother grew too ill to leave her room. I was the perfect choice to give Tabby a good English education: thoroughly respectable and far too plain to tempt her lonely father, Sir Kit, to indiscretion. I knew better than to trust my new employer with the truth about my past. But knowing better couldn’t stop me from yearning for impossible things.

BE AWARE: GRAPHIC, PARTS ARE NSFW OR FOR KIDS
Revisado: 02-22-21
I always check the bottom of the book description for notifications of violence/sexual content/etc., and there was none.
The writing was good, and the narration was excellent, so I kept listening. I'd caught earlier innuendo, but lots of books include references without getting graphic. Call me prudish but I'm not into step-by-step descriptions of a sex scene and it caught me off-guard. Way too graphic for me (for the record, it would have been way too graphic no matter the gender). And then I skipped the rest of the book, so I can't tell you whether the rest was great.
Audible, please do a better job of keeping us informed if we're going to get a full-on encounter. Half the time, I listen with my kids. I need to be able to trust you'll let me know what's in the book. And yes, it said a "queer reimagining," but does that always mean graphic sex scenes? I feel that's stereotyping, because if you had that kind of description in a book with a hetero couple, I bet you'd have it labeled.

What? You don’t know Adam Wade? Here’s your chance! Adam Wade’s personal-yet-universal stories and vulnerable delivery have made him one of the most popular storytellers and comedians in the country on "story slam" platforms like The Moth and Comedy Central’s Whiplash. This Audible Original, performed on stage in front of a live audience, combines Wade’s greatest hits stories with entirely new material.

Revisado: 02-05-20
Adam's ability to tell a story about literally (in the traditional sense of the word) anything and keep me rapt is unparalleled. Thanks for the free bite, Audible. Sometimes I walk away from the free offerings feeling I've wasted time. Not one wasted moment here--this is gold.

Narration was amazing. If you watched The Blacklist, you will recognize one of the voices. I Loved this one. I listen to most books once, occasionally twice if I really like them. Enchantment by Orson Scott Card was the only book in my many-listens category, but this book will be joining it.

When it comes to the holidays, no story brings us back to the true spirit of giving like O. Henry’s classic "The Gift of the Magi". So this year we’ve asked some of your favorite Audible narrators—Audie Award winners Katherine Kellgren, Oliver Wyman, and Jonathan Davis—to bring to life this timeless tale, plus two more of O. Henry’s gems: "The Cop and the Anthem" and "The Last Leaf", in this holiday collection.
