Historia
Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times best sellers including Talking to Strangers and host of the podcast Revisionist History, uses original interviews, archival footage, and his trademark insight to weave together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in Central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard. As listeners hear these stories unfurl, Gladwell examines one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.

Punk’s War reveals the inner workings of the US Navy as only an insider can. An authentic and riveting thriller, it is a highly acclaimed novel of a fighter pilot’s experience in the era just before 9/11. As the US military enters another postconflict period, the themes of leadership during crisis and accomplishing the mission make Punk’s War more relevant than ever.

Start to finish enjoyment. The life of aboard an aircraft carrier and an F-14 squadron. Well written by someone who was there. The narration was excellent as well. I can't wait to listen to the follow on books. Well done!

Historia
In the desolate middle of the largest ocean on earth, two great navies approached, one bent on conclusive battle, the other lying in ambush. Six months after Pearl Harbor, Yamamoto again crossed the Pacific with the largest and most powerful naval armada the world had ever seen, this time to finish the job. Nimitz waited for him with what he had, placed exactly where he needed it. Both admirals depended on their fliers, some veterans of battle, others raw and unproven. Striking first meant decisive victory.

As a longtime student of the Battle of Midway, I throughly enjoyed this book. Fictionalized only in the dialog, the history of this great battle is spot on. The characters are real, and the times and places are real. Mr. Miller puts you in the Ready Room, The cockpits, on the bridge, and in the crew spaces of these great ships. You will not regret listening to this book if you know a little or a lot about The Battle of Midway. Highly Recommended!

Historia
With The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Ship of Ghosts, James D. Hornfischer created essential and enduring narratives about America’s World War II Navy, works of unique immediacy distinguished by rich portraits of ordinary men in extremis and exclusive new information. Now he does the same for the deadliest, most pivotal naval campaign of the Pacific war: Guadalcanal. Neptune’s Inferno is at once the most epic and the most intimate account ever written of the contest for control of the seaways of the Solomon Islands.

if you are able to only read one book on the Naval battles of Guadalcanal this is the one. Yes, there are other more complete works on the Guadalcanal Campaign, Richard Frank's Guadalcanal is foremost, but none match James Hornfischer's Neptune's Inferno. Highly recommended.

Historia
From August 7th 1942 until February 24th 1944, the US Navy fought the most difficult campaign in its history. Between the landing of the 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal and the final withdrawal of the Imperial Japanese Navy from its main South Pacific base at Rabaul, the US Navy suffered such high personnel losses that for years it refused to publicly release total casualty figures.

A first class read. Thomas McKelvey Cleaver knows his stuff and puts out a very readable and interesting work. I appreciated the details that were included about the important air battles over a d around Rabaul. He brings to life this little known aspect of WW2 in the Pacific.

Historia
By the end of February 1944, thanks to hard-fought and costly American victories in the first and second naval battles of Guadalcanal, the battle of Empress Augusta Bay and the battle of Cape St George, the Japanese would no longer hold the materiel or skilled manpower advantage. From this point on, although the war was still a long way from being won, the American star was unquestionably on the ascendant, slowly, but surely, edging Japanese imperialism towards its sunset.

Enjoyed the story but not the narration
Revisado: 06-15-21
A continuation of the author's story of the Guadalcanal Campaign in 1942 and '43. The story is pretty good and well known. This time it is for someone looking to become more familiar with the operations around Guadalcanal in 1942 and '43. The narration was substandard. One recurring theme was the mis-pronunciatan of the ship's name, USS HELENA, named for the City of Helena Montana not the womans name. There are odd mid sentence breaks or breaks within words. Overall the book does a good job of presenting a story of the tribulations and frustrations for both sides during the Guadalcanal Campaig Get a map handy to be familiar with all of the unique named.

Essential reading for Naval Aviation enthusiasts
Revisado: 04-15-21
I couldn't put it away. I consumed this book in a few days. No wasted filler here. Dan Pedersen describes his Naval Aviation career from enlistment to retirement as Captain of the carrier USS Ranger. His description of the formation of TOPGUN during 1968 and '69 is a case study in leadership and how a "Can Do" attitude can transform an organization. This is essential reading for anyone interested in jet fighter combat.

As a Topgun instructor, Bio was responsible for teaching the navy's and Marine Corps' best fighter pilots how to be even better. He schooled them in the classroom and then went head-to-head with them in the skies.

Later he becomes one of the elite Topgun instructors as he shares what it's like to be among the elite of Topgun.

Historia
Whirlwind is the only book to examine in depth the human drama behind the most important bombing campaign in history. While the air war against Nazi Germany has been covered in-depth by many books, Barrett Tillman, a renowned authority on military aircraft and the air war in the Pacific, is the first to tackle the air war against Japan. For decades, historians and politicians have debated whether or not Japan was on the verge of surrender in August 1945---before the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

From India and China to the vast Pacific this is a thorough study of the last year of the air campaign against the Japanese Empire. Highly recommended.
