When Peter Flom was five years old, his parents were told that he had "minimal brain dysfunction" and "would never go to college". Peter skipped one year of high school, did college in three years, and got his BA at 20. In Screwed Up Somehow but Not Stupid, Peter describes what it's like to live with a learning disability, but also some abilities.

Historia
Who invented reality television, the world’s most dangerous pop-culture genre? And why can’t we look away? In this revelatory, deeply reported account of the rise of “dirty documentary”—from its contentious roots in radio to the ascent of Donald Trump—Emily Nussbaum unearths the origin story of the genre that ate the world, as told through the lively voices of the people who built it. At once gimlet-eyed and empathetic, Cue the Sun! explores the morally charged, funny, and sometimes tragic consequences of the hunt for something real inside something fake.

Historia
Elida Friedman was not supposed to have been born. In the Kovno Ghetto in Lithuania, Nazi law forbade Jewish women from giving birth. Yet, despite the fear of death, Dr. Jonah Friedman and his wife Tzila choose to bring a daughter into the world, a little girl they name Elida—meaning non-birth in Hebrew.

Wonderfully unexpected
Revisado: 06-20-24
This book did not fit the typical holocaust genere. Elida was a baby during the war. I found her post war struggle so interesting. Elida faced tremendous upheaval throughout her life and carried the scars of a difficult upbringing with her into adulthood. You can't help rooting for her as her life constantly changes. I recommend this book for anyone interested in Jewish history post WW2.

Historia
Henry Winkler, launched into prominence as “The Fonz” in the beloved Happy Days, has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny, and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

Great story. I felt like I was listening to a family friend tell a truly honest and funny life story. As a dyslexic adult, I could really relate to Henry's struggles in school and in life. His honesty and humor about this made me feel seen. Highly recommend!

Historia
When Lily and Alex entered a packed gymnasium in Queens, New York, in 1972, they barely recognized their son. The boy who escaped to America with them, who was bullied as he struggled to learn English and cope with family tragedy, was now a young man who had discovered and secretly honed his basketball talent on the outdoor courts of New York City. That young man was Ernie Grunfeld, who would go on to win an Olympic gold medal and reach previously unimaginable heights as an NBA player and executive.

Great story! highly recommended
Revisado: 08-23-23
I really connected to this book as a granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor. Likewise, the same grandparent feld communism (in Cuba) to start over in the United States. I really enjoyed how the story unfolded. The writing is great. And I know very little about basketball--which didn't matter at all. It's a beautiful story about family and ancestestry.

Historia
In a remote corner of the world, forgotten for nearly 3,000 years, lived an enclave of Kurdish Jews so isolated that they still spoke Aramaic, the language of Jesus. Mostly illiterate, they were self-made mystics and gifted storytellers and humble peddlers who dwelt in harmony with their Muslim and Christian neighbors in the mountains of northern Iraq. To these descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel, Yona Sabar was born.

VERY entertaining non fiction
Revisado: 10-21-21
Highly recommend this if you love non-fiction. About Truman Capote and his "Swans," socialites of the 50s and 60s. Full of glamor and cunning, these women climbed to the top of society--but many were ultimately unhappy once at the top. This parallels Capote's literary career. It was very entertaining--loved listening to it on auditable.
