Whacked theology meets goofy politics
Revisado: 11-10-24
Good vs Evil, forgiven vs liars, faith vs doubts, Russian mob vs Italian family wrapped up in a mashed up theology bow. Parts made me laugh out loud, while I tried to figure out what the he** was going on. It was a little slow in the beginning but glad I kept at it.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Who knew?? (And I'm from the area!)
Revisado: 09-12-23
Finished a good book this rainy weekend -- The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. The novel is set in Pottstown, PA, in the painful 1930's. Sometimes funny, often surprising (who knew Pottstown had such a rich musical history?) and at times deeply disturbing and distressing. Pottstown's Chicken Hill and Pennhurst are the primary stages for ingenuity, kindness, suspense and terror. This one will probably make it to the big screen.

The city is in a state of shock over the fate of two hometown heroes: Eagles starting quarterback Archie Hughes, and his even more famous wife, Grammy-winning singer Francine Hughes. One spouse is murdered. The other is suspect #1. Even before the case hits the courtroom, it’s the hottest ticket in town. For the defense: Cooper Lamb, private investigator to the stars. For the prosecution: Veena Lion, a sleuth so bright she’s got to wear shades. Between them, they know every secret in Philadelphia. Together, they prove how two wrongs can make a right. They are Lion & Lamb.

Adventures in English

I enjoyed this one even with its quirky transcript dialog gimmick. The storyline, humor, and fast pace through the underworld belly of Philly was good. The male narrator delivered on almost everything except pronunciation of Schuykill, Termini Bros. and Ventnor. How hard is it to find a youtube video or a pronunciation app or even call an acquaintance who lives in Philly to get them right??

COVID-19 is merely a mild backdrop
Revisado: 05-18-21
The whole business of "social pods" is foreign to me after nearly 18 months of living by myself and working from home in a State that had nearly a 20% infection rate. Living in an epicenter of the pandemic (NY/NJ Metro area) had many more restrictions and social isolation than these low country characters' storylines. The social protests, riots and demonstrations, which colored so much of last Spring and Summer, are not even mentioned. Rather, they build a club house and throw a 4th of July party. Really?
Found it very hard to identify with any of the characters and found the story line trivialized the dangers of living during a deadly and (at the time) an untreatable rampant illness. This story ignores the pervasive fears of the summer of 2020 that saw nearly 250,000 deaths. Come on, only one person gets sick and recovers easily? Love and death in the time of C19 this is not.

Just the right tension, action, humor & conflict
Revisado: 03-31-21
It was a long wait but so worth it. New stories, deeper character development and a sagebrush landscape in the imagination made for a satisfying non stop listening experience. Particulary like the expansion of the younger characters story lines . Also like the interplay between Doc and Dawes and learning more of the back story in Ohio.

During her time there, on a gray winter’s day, a young student at the school watches the school’s headmaster, Father August Franz, fall to his death from the church tower. Two decades later, the child - now a grown man, haunted by the past - calls the nun back to the scene of the crime.

Not a fan
Revisado: 12-16-19
The author spends too much time painting the protagonist as an idiot with a cell/mobile phone, despite her being a member of the generation that invented and continues to perfect it. He also uses stereotypes to describe her motivation for becoming a nun such as running away from her sexual nature or being too easily manipulated by an ambitious priest.
He also further paints a one sided expression of religious women who substitute dogs and gardens for children, home and spouse. I did not believe the final outcome of the mystery for one minute and felt cheated after completing the book.

Western Radio Drama has a long, complex and exciting history. Powder River's latest installment is a wonderful addition in the Audible era. Tension, suspense, laughter and tears await the listener. I purchased this at 3:30 Am and enjoyed every missing minute of sleep. The series is terrific and my favorite on Audible.

Green Acres meets A Christmas Carol
Revisado: 06-29-18
This is one of the more intriguing books I've enjoyed this year. Themes of loss and renewal, the chains that bind, and ghosts/dreams of the past, present and future are all set in rural New York. Scrooge has become a female lawyer, and Marley is her lost law firm partner. Tiny Tim is sometimes an 80 year man or a 6 year old girl. Don't get me wrong, this is not a Christmas tale. But it does capture the themes so familiar in A Christmas Carol and brings them into 2018. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Historia
Only God knew why Jillian Slater agreed to return to New Orleans on the news that her father had finally drunk himself to death. It's not like they were close. She hadn't seen him - or her grandmother, the ice queen - in almost 20 years. But when Adella Atwater, the manager of her grandmother's apartment house, called and said her expenses would be paid if she'd fly in for the burial, a free trip to New Orleans was too intriguing to resist.

Is it a mystery? Is it a romance? Is it an indictment of divorce? Is it a Christian evangelical told you so? Bored me to the point of skipping chapters.
