I started this book, and after a couple of chapters, I moved on to a couple other books. Then I came back to it, and I came to absolutely love the narration. I kept thinking, “where did they get this guy?” His New Orleans accents were dead on, and he did a pretty good job on the Irish, although it wasn’t northern Irish. The story was, as with all Burke’s Robicheaux novels, a great yarn. Great character development, with insight, so rich, you wonder how the author knows so much.

When Chet is in danger, I have to speed up the audio because it breaks my heart so. But when he’s on a roll, he is outrageously hilarious. Among other things, this book is about a dog and his human and all that is between them. I could not love it Moore.

The metaphors and dialogue are outrageously inauthentic. The narrator tries to affect some folksy accent for narrative, and her attempt at North Carolina accents is painful to hear. Why not just hire someone from NC to narrate? And the characters are totally implausible.

A different Grisham altogether; a very good listen

This is the first Grisham book I've read that takes place on an international stage. Although it's done really well, the Italian lessons are probably better on page than audio. It's not the kind of book that you can listen to with one ear and still get the gist. There are a lot of characters, and the plot is satisfyingly complex. I found it hard to break away from the book; I couldn't wait to get back to it. The narration, when considering all the accents covered in this book, was very good.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, the plot is woven so artfully that its construction is invisible. I was intrigued from the very beginning. The characters are well developed and interesting.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely. All of his books are.

Any additional comments?

I can't wait to get the next Benjamin Black book.

What would have made The Light We Lost better?

How about a plot?

Would you ever listen to anything by Jill Santopolo again?

No!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

None whatsoever.

Any additional comments?

This book is nothing more than syrupy, repetative, saccharine treacle. The story was totally predictable. The protagonist is so self-absorbed, she leaves no oxygen in the room for the reader to breathe. The book was assigned for my book club; otherwise I would have returned it after page two.

What made the experience of listening to The Cuckoo's Calling the most enjoyable?

Robert Glenister is outstanding. He brings rich color and distinction to each character and makes the story realistic and entertaining. At times, I was laughing out loud at his dialogue narration. The story line is full-bodied with intricate detail that could pull you out of the story if the narration wasn't so fabulous.

What other book might you compare The Cuckoo's Calling to and why?

Scott Turrow's Presumed Innocent for the detail and believability.

Which character – as performed by Robert Glenister – was your favorite?

Strike is a multi-dimensional hero who is both inspiring and exasperating. Guy, the fashion designer is a riot!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud at parts of it. Strike angered me for what seems to me to be a tendency toward self-inflicted misery.

Any additional comments?

I've listened to all three of Galbraith's books. This is the best, by far.

What did you like best about The Whistler? What did you like least?

The story was craftily constructed like a spider weaves a web, first with a broad framework and then filling in the details. As for the dirty rotten scoundrels, I won't give away the ending. Some of the writing did not sound like Grisham, though, a trait I've noticed in some of his recent books. The narrator was, without a doubt, the worst I've ever heard. Thank goodness the story was so good, otherwise I would not have been able to get beyond the first chapter.

Where does The Firebird rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

creme de la creme

Who was your favorite character and why?

Rob. If you've listened to this book, you need not ask why. For those who have not, he's gentle, strong, witty, funny, patient, a man of action; one who knows what he wants but doesn't push. He doesn't need to.

What about Katherine Kellgren’s performance did you like?

This woman is simply outstanding. What can't she do? She never sounds as though she is stretched beyond her abilities. This book throws it all at her: males, females, children, English, Scots of various regions, Irish, Russian, whatever. She does it all, extremely capably.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Consumed it voraciously. Loved listening to it. Couldn't get enough. The laughs in it are so delightful.

Any additional comments?

I'm looking at the author's other books with the same narrator.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

There's art and there's craft. Monet and macrame. This is more like macrame. I mean, this is the life of one of the greatest men who ever lived. The subject deserves a great telling. This wasn't it.

Did Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power inspire you to do anything?
