Historia
Blythe Connor is determined that she will be the warm, comforting mother to her new baby Violet that she herself never had. But in the thick of motherhood's exhausting early days, Blythe becomes convinced that something is wrong with her daughter - she doesn't behave like most children do. Or is it all in Blythe's head? Her husband, Fox, says she's imagining things. The more Fox dismisses her fears, the more Blythe begins to question her own sanity, and the more we begin to question what Blythe is telling us about her life as well.

WOW! This is a must-listen for every mother!
Revisado: 03-20-22
I am stunned by the brutal truthfulness in this fictional book. All the ugly parts of motherhood that no one wants to acknowledge are perfectly expressed in the main character, Blythe. I related to her so much and felt for her, for all she went through as both a child and a mother. I really hope there is a sequel in the works because I NEED TO KNOW what happens next!

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

If you are white, please read this book with an open-mind. Some of it may be hard to hear, but it is so necessary for growth and to become an antiracist.

Historia
Born in a bathtub in 1954 to a white mother and a Cherokee father, Betty Carpenter is the sixth of eight siblings. The world they inhabit in the rural town of Breathed, Ohio, is one of poverty and violence—both from outside the family and, devastatingly, from within. But despite the hardships she faces, Betty is resilient. Her curiosity about the natural world, her fierce love for her sisters, and her father’s brilliant stories are kindling for the fire of her own imagination, and in the face of all to which she bears witness, Betty discovers an escape: she begins to write.

No words!
Revisado: 09-13-20
I have no words to adequately describe how deeply I experienced this book and how much it means to me. It is the amazing story of the multi-layered complexities a family: both the close and beautiful relationships as well as the troubled and twisted. This book will stay with me for a long, long time.

Historia
Tracy K. Smith has a fairly typical upbringing in suburban California: the youngest in a family of five children raised with limitless affection and a firm belief in God by a stay-at-home mother and an engineer father. But after spending a summer in Alabama at her grandmother's home, she returns to California with a new sense of what it means for her to be Black: from her mother's memories of picking cotton as a girl in her father's field for pennies a bushel to her parents' involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.

Deeply touching
Revisado: 05-25-20
Just finished this book and I am in tears....the author’s experiences are so poignant, touching and relatable. Although I’m still lucky enough to have my mom in my life, she touched on so many fears I have as we both age. I’m also close in age to the author and my mom has a similar personality and upbringing, so I could relate so much to the time period and through my own childhood and adolescent experiences. This one will stay with me for a long time.
