Historia
When George Washington was elected president, he reluctantly left behind his beloved Mount Vernon to serve in Philadelphia, the temporary seat of the nation's capital. In setting up his household, he took Tobias Lear, his celebrated secretary, and eight slaves, including Ona Judge, about which little has been written. As he grew accustomed to Northern ways, there was one change he couldn't get his arms around: Pennsylvania law required enslaved people be set free after six months of residency in the state. Washington decided to circumvent the law.

Historia
Within a few years of its first issue in 1951, Jet, a pocket-sized magazine, became the "bible" for news of the civil rights movement. It was said, only half-jokingly, "If it wasn't in Jet, it didn't happen." Writing for the magazine and its glossy, big sister Ebony, for 53 years, longer than any other journalist, Washington bureau chief Simeon Booker was on the front lines of virtually every major event of the revolution that transformed America.

Powerful story
Revisado: 04-29-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes, learned a lot of history and Booker offered a unique perspective
What was one of the most memorable moments of Shocking the Conscience?
Definitely the story of the freedom rides
What three words best describe Ronald Clarkson’s performance?
monotone, lacked tonation
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
possibly... would be hard to cover all of this history in 1 movie
Any additional comments?
Audio file needs editing... several places where sentences are repeated. Book needs a different narrator.

Disappointing...
Revisado: 02-17-16
Would you try another book from Laurie R. King and/or Jefferson Mays?
King's Mary Russel series far exceeded 'The Bones of Paris'.
So I might but only after I listened to a preview of the book.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Very little redeeming about the main character. The plot is akin to a cat chasing its tail... there are not the usual twists of a King novel. Toward the end of the novel, there is a potential twist when the missing woman's passport is discovered. But this twist seems underdeveloped and underutilized.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Great setting - Paris in the 1920s is grand.
