I listened to this book after I had seen and heard much of Peterson and his rules. He has gotten better, as a thinker and speaker. This book was a bit disappointing for me - in the same way the first season of The Simpsons has dated. It was good, but it got better.

I suppose that's unfair and if you're not too aware of him give this book a try. Its well thought out and despite the left v right dichotomy played by most critics he's balanced and thoughtful.

For mine, the idea that you can pick only a single side and only ever support people and ideas of that side is immature and ultimately limiting. People are imperfect and sometimes they do the wrong thing, make a mistake or change their mind.

There's a lot wrong with the idea that being correct instills a right to disrespect others. Peterson doesn't do this and if you listen or watch him a lot you start to see that people's two dimensional view of the world simply can't cope with someone who thinks in more than 2D.

Is he perfect? Not at all. Personally the idea that we should see skateboarding as anything more than a path to delinquency is beyond me. :-D

But the point he makes is a good one.

In the end its the style of thought and his approach to respect and reason that resonates more than any specific idea. The current trend to completely shutdown disagreement and genuine questions and discussions is shallow and contradictory to what progressive thinking stands for.

Talking about competence has always been something people have avoided. it shines a too harsh light on the fact that many people simply manipulate situations to suit their own agenda rather than seek to raise the common denominator.

Often the very worst examples of this is when these same people hide behind genuine victims.

Peterson seeks to rise above this and approach life, and being better at it, from a genuine wish to be better himself, and to pass on what he's learned to the reader/listener.

If this is what you're seeking, give it a try.

This is the one, every reader has one, dog eared, coffee stained, read repeatedly.

The audio version didn't disappoint.

I first read this in the 80s and King's novel about JFK's assassination has some similarities.

The story poses an interesting question. Would you do things differently if you were given a second chance? How much of that decision is based on who you've become and how much is based on local knowledge? How much would you remember if you found yourself reliving your youth?

Like Ground Hog day, the answer for most is in the nuance. Its not about drastic change, but rather fine tuning. Including of one's self.

People say hindsight is an exact science. This tends to sway us towards being more negative about the lows and more positive about the highs.

I think Replay is an example of how most of us would approach such a situation. And in that it has a reality that some other stories miss.

Highly recommend,

I am a fan of Thorensen's earlier series and Jonathan Davis does great work.

What sets this above other comparable titles is the depth of character development. You care for or dislike characters for more than their story arcs. You can relate to people, or not. A person does something that you like or dislike, but you're also well aware of their motives and context. I like this depth.

The story is a good one and I can see the series continuing into the future. I don't mind this at all - what's the hurry?

There are times with audio titles when you're not sure of who is who and why - this is definitely not the case with Thorensen.

At first I thought, what a great idea. Despite not being a teenager I enjoy the genre and the earlier books were good.

However, I'm stuck - currently on pause. I understand spending thousands of words on a single thought but is it too much?

Is 25 hours simply too long to retell a familiar story from a different point of view? There is some extra intel about character stories but sometimes I wonder how Meyer characters get out of bed in the morning - so much angst and self doubt.

I'm sure that I'll un pause at some stage, no doubt when I'm short of credits. But for now, phew.

You know the drill. Too many choices makes spending your next credit difficult. Some time ago I started searching for new listens based on good narrators. That's how I stumbled upon this title.

Another review said this book reminded them of Star Trek and other Earth future Sci Fi - I tend to agree. I also like the level of detail in regards to the technology.

Its only early in the series and I can feel the story arcs developing, enough that I'll try the second installment. I'll be looking for more character development. There's some, but there needs to be more in my view. Having said that, its enjoyable and feels to be going somewhere.

However, be warned. Rosone is a Musk fan boy. I did think about stopping right when I first heard a reference, but pettiness is unbecoming someone older than 5.

:-D

Up until the final scenes I was really enjoying this one. The time spent in the main character's youth would suit me for a series all of it's own. Some very well developed characters and an excellent setting for a very good story. I was invested in our main character and felt like I was right there in rural 1950's America.

But somewhere around the climax I found I was finished before I was really aware of what was happening. I was literally aware of the course of events but there was no connection between this portion and the rest of the book.

What could have been captured over tens, or even hundreds of pages was rushed through in 5.

Shame really.

Whilst I enjoyed this book it spent far too much time in the physical realm.

What do I mean by that?

For a story with the gumption to explore infinity I could have done without the time wasted setting the scene. It felt like more than half the book dealt with subjects that could have been glossed over to ensure enough time was spent exploring the premise of the book.

Worthy of a listen sure, but scant material for the seeker.

I must admit I avoided Ready Player One for a while because of Wil Wheaton. I like Wil but an earlier narration was short on gaps which made a narration done with a single voice difficult.

Not so here. Wheaton has come along nicely and fit the main character to a tee.

This was a very enjoyable story with modern sensibilities. As a child of the 80's I enjoyed the references but its strength was much more than that.

Cline spent time creating a complex world within a complex world and I, for one, enjoyed the experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

It wasn't the idea of big brother so much as they way the story was read. Dion Graham does a superb job capturing the millennial nature of the characters. Obviously this needed the correct dialogue but I'm certain I would have missed much of the nuance if I read the print version.

Thought provoking and satisfying effort.

Great book.

Interesting story and great characters. I don't read Koontz religiously but he does have some crackers from time to time.

Narration was reminiscent of Dragnet. I actually grew to like it.
