Very poor Narrator
Revisado: 01-08-24
Due to the poor quality of the recording, the lack of annunciation and differentiation between the characters, this was incredibly difficult to understand. I gave up trying to re-listen to parts and just let it go, having no clue what was said or who said it. The story itself was weak as well.

Potential Not Achieved
Revisado: 06-28-23
The thinly drawn characters and plot, along with poor narration, kept this idea from bring what it could be--a book 40-50 somethings could connect to.

Historia
Shy, bookish, and admittedly awkward, Lily Greene has always felt inadequate compared to the rest of her accomplished family, who strive for Black excellence. She dreams of becoming a children’s books editor, but she’s been frustratingly stuck in the nonfiction division for years without a promotion in sight. Lily finds escapism in her correspondences with her favorite fantasy author, and what begins as two lonely people connecting over email turns into a tentative friendship and possibly something else Lily won’t let herself entertain—until he ghosts her without a word.

Cute story, poor narration
Revisado: 06-26-23
The story was cute, and had much more potential than was achieved. The male Narrator was unnecessary. He could not do female voices and made them sound infantile, almost mocking. It was a but insulting. Overall, it's better read than listened to. Just wish the author had achieved more with the book.

Historia
Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-17-23
The plot was forced, and the characters were thin. While following the same general formula of others in the genre, I could not connect with these characters. They lacked any sort of depth. I couldn't even figure out if I liked or disliked them.

What happens when the one that got away comes back? Find out in this sparkling debut from Mhairi McFarlane. Rachel and Ben. Ben and Rachel. It was them against the world. Until it all fell apart. It’s been a decade since they last spoke, but when Rachel bumps into Ben one rainy day, the years melt away. They’d been partners in crime and the best of friends. But life has moved on: Ben is married. Rachel is not. Yet in that split second, Rachel feels the old friendship return. And along with it, the broken heart she’s never been able to mend.

This is a miss for McFarlane
Revisado: 06-09-23
The author's books are typically entertaining, but this one had uninteresting characters and a slow-moving, boring plot. The narrator doesn't help, because the accent she used for the protagonist is so thick and in the throat, that she is VERY difficult to understand. It is a choice, as she does not do the same for the other characters. However, as this is from a single POV, it's truly hard to follow in places.

Entertaining, well-written multi-perspective novel
Revisado: 02-14-23
While typically formulaic, Shari Low writes well and gives her characters more depth with multiple perspectives. However, I struggle with this Narrator and others like. If a character laughs in a book, the Narrator should not. It sounds so forced and disingenuous and truly disrupts the story pulling the listener out of the story. The same can be said of Narrators who believe they should sound like they're eating when the writing says they are. The listener/reader is capable of believing it is happening.

Poorly written and developed
Revisado: 06-27-22
I know this is only predictable, formulaic fluff, but it's not entertaining fluff. There are so many others out there that the reader can connect with the characters.
The protagonist, claimed to be so kind by other characters, was not. After "the twist" she seemed more interested in telling other people what she knew (i.e. gossip) than the feelings of the person the twist was about--her "friend". She also seems to have zero personality as did the characters, so there was no one to care about in this novel.

Not the best narrator
Revisado: 05-14-22
The Narrator for Rory was shaky the entire time. I'm not sure if this was meant to show emotion, but it made the character very annoying. The Narrator for Soline was difficult to understand. As an accent coach once said, there is a fine line between authenticity and being understood when performing. This Narrator often crossed that line.

Terrible narration and writing
Revisado: 03-19-22
This is a very superficial and amateurish novel about immature people and unintelligent characters. It's a montage of ridiculous slang, social media and pop culture references. The characters are unlikable and unsympathetic, and the writing is pedestrian and trying too hard to "be cool" and "in". As a result it was dated before it was released. To make matters worse, the narrator has zero differentiation between voices, and it is often difficult to know who is talking or thinking and what is going on.

Good story and characters, poor narration
Revisado: 09-19-21
I really like this storyline and find the entire PPD universe like a fun action/adventure movie that just keeps going. The story is predictable, BUT it's fun and humorous as well as contains evolving characters. My one problem is still the narration. There is no inflection, no changes in character, and is dull. I wish the author had narrated this instead. While a couple of his voice choices are silly, he infuses the characters with some intent, and it doesn't become confusing as to who is actually talking.
