Sweet and clever gargoyle story

I love all the books, series, standalone, and even newsletters that Kristen Painter writes. If she writes it, I read it. Generally, I am not a big novella fan until this one; so much excitement and suspense was packed into a short time. I would have had no problem reading this story if it was longer, but it was perfect the way it was and was so good.

The gargoyle story theme was brilliant, sweet, and quite dreamy. The way that they were able to overcome financial difficulties was clever. I will definitely read this story again and again.

Narration by BJ. Harrison is always enjoyable.

This book was the answer to so many questions throughout the series. Possibly my favorite book of the series. I love that we have some resolution to what happened after the book Monster In The Mirror.

I read these book as they were released, but this book makes me want to go back and binge the series. The author’s character and world building is so satisfying you feel that you are immersed in the story.

This book can be read as a standalone, but I am happy that I read them in order so that the world and characters grew with the series.

As always, BJ Harrison’s narration is a delight.

The Frost and Crowe series keeps getting better

The Frost and Crowe books keep getting better. The books about palace life were okay and necessary, but I love these road trip mysteries. It was a clever premise and storyline that I have never read before. So many closed door mysteries are similar with slight variations. The Frost and Crowe mysteries are unique and engaging.

This book was especially awesome for me, being an Elvis fan and getting to read about things at Graceland that I haven't experienced myself. I like that the victim of the crime that they solve was polite and caring. That was also a unique spin on many mysteries. It was just a good mystery with the right amount of suspense and tension to make me dread putting it down for the night. I really hope we get more Frost and Crowe mysteries, we need to see what special abilities a mini Jayne and Sinclair might have.

I am summing up the series, to date, with this review. Initially, the male narrators were okay. When Gwendolyn Druyor started narrating I was dismayed. I had heard her narration in the Kay Sharpe series and it was like nails on a chalkboard. The way she has a smile in her voice as someone is about to die and the babyish voice used for every singe victim. This series was just as hard once her narration started, climaxing in the book, "The Girl They Took". Even my husband, who has less issues with voices than I do, wanted the victim's mother killed off just so we wouldn't have to listen to her character's voice. Weirdly though, this book out of any book Druyor has narrated, has been enjoyable. I was shocked.

The storyline is good but there are some issues that I feel warrant mentioning. SA Pearson; he yells at Tess, threatens her to "tow the line", threatens dismissal and then turns to her for help in not one, but two personal matters. Being harsh and hateful to the point of hostility and then telling her there is no one better than she. It screams abusive work relationship.

Tess; who in every single book has been either captured or willingly given herself over as a hostage. I can't think of any law enforcement agency that would condone this. This last book, she throws all her FBI profiling knowledge out the window and overly identifies with the victim to the point of letting the victim run the case. Being book 9 in a series you would expect an FBI agent to grow and be smarter, not more reckless. Maybe she should be put on suspension and get some personal counseling before being allowed to return to work. Oh yeah, she was told to get therapy... how many books ago? Obviously she didn't and it was ignored by her boss who doesn't seem to ignore or lose track of anything.... hmm

My Last Stephen King Book

The main part of the book takes place during the events of Covid.

The first several chapters dedicated to extreme pro vaxers to the nth degree. I reluctantly was vaccinated in 2021 but was never THIS fanatical about everyone else in the world being vaccinated. This felt like a straight Fauci inspired montage.

Every chapter we are forced to hear characters greet with the, “ Are you vaccinated?” (Vaccines are mentioned 32 times) “You can take off your mask.” (Masks are mentioned 66 times) “Please wear a mask.” Every chapter… I lived through the mandates and never heard these phrases spoken so often.

Climate change is mentioned by a septuagenarian, who has lived through the ups and downs of climate change, but acted as if crazy weather was new. I am totally pro saving the climate and recycle, compost, reuse, etc. but this felt like a democratic infomercial.

Speaking of politics. There is no doubt King is a democrat and he wants you to know this as fanatically as Maga followers want to cram their agendas down your throat.

I am a long time reader of King. The sexual preference slurs and racial slurs his characters made in the 80’s were a sign of how degenerate the characters were. 40+ years later, these slurs seem more like a reflection on the author, not the characters. There is absolutely no reason the words f*g or the N word should be used in modern literature.

Chapters are frustrating. I have been on Chapter 1 more than 40 times. He names each section by date (that I have a hard time of keeping track of when we get into 2021. I lost track of what was in the past and what was current time because I was always on chapter 1 of 2021.

I wasn’t thrilled with his recent release, FairyTale, and less thrilled with this book. I only finished it because Holly is near and dear to me, as a fellow Aspie, and I wanted to hear how she and Jerome were faring after Bill’s death.

As to Holly, who is terrified of getting Covid or the new Delta variant, masks and sanitizes often in between chain smoking, 68 cigarettes mentioned. If find this laughable. Dying of Covid is scary, lung cancer is better?

The book is great, great story, character development, suspense, intrigue; checks all the boxes in what makes a crime thriller a great book. The narration though makes me cringe. The narrator’s baby voice for any woman except the main character is grating at best. You can hear what sounds like smiles or laughter in the narrator’s voice at inappropriate times. Regular speed is unbearable and 1.2 speed is better, but I was dismayed to see she is the narrator for almost all of Leslie Wolfe’s books… cringe.

I downloaded all the KU books available so that I only have to listen while driving.

Had I read the reviews first, I would not have picked this book. I am a sexual abuse survivor, by multiple persons, for multiple years. This book is heavy and to hear the twisted thoughts of the type of people who do these crimes, is hard, but not as hard as I thought it would be. The fact that I got to see the justice for the victims that wasn’t given to me, was kind of cathartic. I felt better after reading it because of how determined Det. Sharp was in solving this case. I wish someone had fought for me that hard. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes crime thrillers, serial killers, and/or police procedurals.

The narration though makes me cringe. The narrator’s baby voice for any woman except the main character is grating at best. You can hear what sounds like smiles or almost laughter in the narrator’s voice at inappropriate times and in inappropriate situations.
