Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Simply put? Beautiful and compelling.

I truly enjoyed this story because it put a great many things I had set in the back of my mind into perspective. Women are so much stronger and wiser than they are ever credited. History has yet to make up for the losses in wondrous knowledge due to an ever painful and disgraceful patriarchy that continues to haunt us as a species.

Historia
Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned. Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it. What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do? Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book even if it wasn’t fictional. I’ve never been very prone to reading non-fiction but Steinbeck drew me in with his narrative and the narrator kept me going. It is very good!

On her sixtieth birthday, a woman commits suicide. When the case lands on Detective Carl Mørck’s desk, he can’t imagine what this has to do with Department Q, Copenhagen’s cold cases division since the cause of death seems to be clear. But his superior, Marcus Jacobsen, is convinced that this is not in fact a suicide, but a murder related to an unsolved case that has been plaguing him since 1988.

Excellent!

I didn’t expect anything less from Jussi Adler-Olsen. I love every single one of his Department Q installments, I’m just sorry he can’t write them fast enough. At least, he’s not R.R. Martin. We, at least, get a book every so often. I can’t wait for the next one. I hope a movie is produced based on this book. I genuinely enjoyed watching Lie Kaas and Fares in the roles of Carl and Assad, respectively. If you haven’t seen the movies, you must; but read the books, first!

Absolutely not the best book of the series!
Revisado: 11-10-18
I think that Kim's narrative was just to dramatic and odious. She's always been a tough cookie, but her selfish attitude was just too much, this time.

Narradora horrible/ Horrible Narrator
Revisado: 03-03-18
Es una mierda./ This book has reminded me of the reason why I refuse to buy narrated books in Spanish. The narrators have an intonation, a pitch, and an fucked up articulation. The narrator of this particular work is robotic. I am suffering with every sentence that she produces. I can not believe they cannot find someone better than this broad. Oh my GOD! And I was so excited about this book. Vinals Colubi has ruined it for me. No way! I do not know if I can finish it. It's bullshit.

Historia
An internationally best-selling author, Anchee Min draws upon her Chinese heritage to pen lush historical epics. Here she transports listeners to the Far East for a fictionalized account of acclaimed author Pearl Buck’s youth. Arriving in late 19th-century China with her missionary parents, Buck is soon fascinated by her new home and strikes up a friendship with a young Chinese girl named Willow. The two become inseparable, even as civil war, failed relationships, and world conflicts threaten all they hold dear.

A beautifully written story with a mix of non-fiction and fiction. Some parts of the narrative do sound a bit fantastic and exaggerated, but it could easily be a faithful reflection of Buck's passion, experiences, and yearning for China. Well-worth the read. Lovely.

Historia
We have three souls, or so I'd been told. But only in death could I confirm this.... So begins the haunting and captivating tale, set in 1935 China, of the ghost of a young woman named Leiyin, who watches her own funeral from above and wonders why she is being denied entry to the afterlife. Beside her are three souls - stern and scholarly yang; impulsive, romantic yin; and wise, shining hun - who will guide her toward understanding. She must, they tell her, make amends.
