Historia
Ever since Edgar Allan Poe looted a family's ignoble secret history for his classic story "The Fall of the House of Usher", living in the shadow of that sick dynasty has been an inescapable scourge for generations of Usher descendants. But not for horror novelist Rix Usher. Years ago he fled the isolated family estate of Usherland in the menacing North Carolina hills to pursue his writing career. He promised never to return. But his father's impending death has brought Rix back home to assume the role of Usher patriarch - and face his worst fears.

Would have been better to read.
Revisado: 06-01-21
I think Gone South by Robert McCammon is one of the finest audio books I've experienced. The story and the performance were magnificent. So I was excited to listen to Usher's Passing as I do love horror. But the performance destroyed my ability to enjoy the story itself. The tenor was over-wrought, the accents were obnoxious and the constant shouting nerve wracking. Sort of like Scott Brick on a mega-dose of caffeine. Characters sensitive to sound are screaming? Why? Anyway, perhaps reading the story will be better as it seems to have some interesting elements to it.

Historia
There is an old, empty house in Devil's Cleave, a deep gorge that leads from the high moors down to the harbour village of Hollow Bay. The house is Crickley Hall and it's large and grim, somehow foreboding. It's rumoured to be haunted. It's thought to hold a secret. Despite some reservations, the Caleighs move in, searching for respite in this beautiful part of North Devon, seeking peace and perhaps to come to terms with what's happened to them as a family. But all is not well with the house....

Horrendous crime
Revisado: 11-21-13
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I was enjoying this story until it got to the underlying story involving children. Then it became unbearable. I like this author, and I love horror stories, but this one just made me sick at heart.

Historia
Both Liz and Wrangell police officer Paul Howard are convinced the whales and dolphins of Sumner Strait are dangerously disoriented. Meanwhile, Tim "Tango" has something to hide, and Mink, the maverick owner of the Velvet Moose bar is out of control. Scott Beringer, newly arrived marine biologist, knows something about "Tango," even while hiding his own past. Alaska may be a haven where you can hide, yet it is a wilderness fraught with danger. It takes someone like Liz Romero to tame its mysteries.

Love these characters and the setting
Revisado: 02-12-11
I've listened to both books by Simpson, this one and "Crow in Stolen Colors". I love them both and look forward to more. The author combines good plots with well drawn characters grinding out a life in Alaska's harsh and beautiful environment. Both stories weave in bits of information on Alaskan history and art, and the tough individuals drawn to life in in such a splendid, difficult place. I think the reader's voice is perfect for the people in these stories, a bit harsh and individualistic. I know reader preference is highly subjective, but I can't imagine someone else reading these stories.
