Historia
Maria Lunurin has been living a double life for as long as she can remember. To the world, she is Sister Maria, dutiful nun and devoted servant of Aynila's Codicían colonizers. But behind closed doors, she is a stormcaller, chosen daughter of the Aynilan goddess Anitun Tabu. In hiding not only from the Codicíans and their witch hunts, but also from the vengeful eye of her slighted goddess, Lunurin does what she can to protect her fellow Aynilans and the small family she has created in the convent: her lover Catalina, and her younger sister Inez.

Well Executed Romantasy For All
Revisado: 10-25-24
It is hard to avoid the current popularity of the Romantasy genre these days and I've read my share with no small amount of trepidation as it is not in my normal wheelhouse. I found that most of the popular novels in this genre lean too far on romance with the fantasy aspect taking a back seat. Gabriella B. has written a very well-balanced novel and avoided this pitfall.
The story is part historical fiction (Filipino circa 1500's I believe, during the Spanish occupation), part fantasy and of course the romance, and she played them all out extremely well. It was a tall order, but she balanced it all keeping all three aspects moving forward.
Even if this is not your usual genre, I would encourage you to give it a chance. It is a unique and refreshing novel for the genre.

Historia
Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry.

An Incredible Journey
Revisado: 10-09-24
I knew the famous high points of Leonardo, but was not prepared for the journey of this indelibly flawed, and great man. While at times the story may seem monotonous in its details, but I found myself at the same time awed at the curiosity and genius of the mans ability to discern the wonderful machinations of the world around him. His insatiable curiosity, while marred at the same time to be so easily distracted, even to a fault you will learn, is, in the end, what made him so human and if I may use the term, genius.
The book is well done, chronicling the life, times and failures of this classic figure. Well done Mr. Isaacson.

I am always surprised and excited when I can find a book that exceeds the first and comes into its own. The world building, storylines, and character expansion all became more flushed out in this second installment. Well done.

Colorful and well thought out characters in the First Law world. The main cast was well done, not quite Logan Nine Fingers or Glokta but those two are some of the best around.
Gritty and dark per Abercrombie and a definite recommended extension of the world.

As Good as I Remember
Revisado: 03-15-22
It has been a while since my first pass at these titles many years ago but I have to admit it was a great pleasure to read them again
The characters, the settings, the lore, the landscape and world building are just so well done in this series. I love falling into such books and immersing myself. If you love great D&D lore and worlds, this is definitely a book series for you.
As for Paul B's narration I have to say I personally really felt he did the voices really well and brought great emotion. I will admit his reading style is a bit slow and can seem off pace. May I suggest increasing your reading speed to 1.1 or even 1.2 like I did, I kindle read along with the audible and often find myself having to speed up narrations for my personal reading speed and in this case it really helped.

Exceptional Historical Fiction
Revisado: 07-25-21
Full Disclosure: To be fair I love historical fiction so I’m a bit biased
That being said this is a great listen/read. The science, attention to detail of the period and character development has made this an exciting and informative adventure/thriller. This is an exceptional example of how to do historical fiction right, weaving the fiction with just the right amount of truth. I burned through this large book in two days I could not put it down and look forward to the sequels.
If you like a good thriller, the space race and/or the Cold War genres I do not think you will be disappointed.
FYI: I bought the kindle version as well, I like the reading while being read to and the printed version has some really geeky diagrams of the fictional hardware in the book. A very nice touch.

Big Book-Big Payoff
Revisado: 02-29-20
I had this in my queue for a while hesitant of some reviews speaking to length and a slow start. I should have gone with my gut and just pulled the trigger. This was an extremely enjoyable book and I had a hard time putting it down, reading this behemoth in less than a week (Audible + Kindle Immersion reading).
I won’t reiterate the plot but suffice it to say, there are characters you will love and hate, well thought out world building with a rich history and lore and just the right amount of political intrigue and love story as to not bog things down. Did I mention pirates? Sorry “Privateers”
I confess I have a love/hate relationship with the series/trilogy titles. Some are so good while others are just a bunch of filler making me buy titles to get to the payoff. Then there are standalone novels like this that are so good you want to return, but it’s singleness is part of what makes it so good.
How many books have you waking up the next day thinking about them? This one did and I’m glad I finally pulled that trigger.

Great Addition to the Space Team Universe
Revisado: 03-04-19
After reading the Space team series I immediately reached for the Deadman series. It did not disappoint. The humor is a bit more deadpan and drier than Cal and the SpaceTeam series but excellent all the same.
The mystery and SciFi mixture is done quite well and blends well. If you like the colorful characters like those in the Space Team universe and a good ol' fashioned detective story give this one a go. May you enjoy it as much as I did.
