Historia
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Historia
In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

Important read for everyone, especially teams and new parents
Revisado: 10-09-23
There is a crisis unfolding around us, that very few of us are talking about. Our attention is slowly being eroded away by not only the things you might expect it from, but also from things you may never have connected the dots on. This book, while a little bit meandering, does an excellent job of pulling together the reasons for why we are all struggling with attention and why that matters so much.
Full of practical tips, but more importantly, a deeper understanding of why, and how to change things systemically, this book should be required reading for new parents, teens, and anyone who feels like they are losing themselves to technology.
It’s not all doom and gloom, and there is hope woven into the story. A really interesting and important read!

Historia
We evolved to eat berries rather than bagels, to live in mud huts rather than condos, to sprint barefoot rather than play football - or did we? Are our bodies and brains truly at odds with modern life? Although it may seem as though we have barely had time to shed our hunter-gatherer legacy, biologist Marlene Zuk reveals that the story is not so simple. Popular theories about how our ancestors lived - and why we should emulate them - are often based on speculation, not scientific evidence. Armed with a razor-sharp wit and brilliant, eye-opening research, Zuk takes us to the cutting edge of biology to show that evolution can work much faster than was previously realized.

It may not be what you want to hear, but it’s important to hear!
Revisado: 07-18-18
Marlene Zuk has done a solid job of pulling together research from multiple arenas of science to back up everything she is explaining. She uses great analogies and helps us to understand more clearly our own evolutionary past and future.
I would have rated this book higher, but at some points I struggled to make sense of what was being said. I think I’m going to get a hard copy of this book so that I can more fully digest her claims and information. While not a “beginners guide“ to evolution and natural selection and the science behind how we understand it, Zuk does a really good job of helping to make the complex understandable.
I teach high school biology so I probably have more background then the average listener, but this book is so important for everyone to at least think about. She lays out a very strong case for why it is false to think that humans are “done“ evolving and that natural selection does not still work on us.
Her treatment of the Paleo crowd is not harsh but is not particularly kind. She is more matter-of-fact and clearly explains why our fantasy with all things Paleo is just that, a fantasy.
A solid listen, but I think it would be a better physical read. If you don’t have the time for it though, listening is the next best thing.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Worth every minute!

Kept me on the edge of my seat! Laugh out loud funny and the scientific detail was really interesting. R.C. Bray did a wonderful job with different voices. Pacing was good too. Highly recommend to anyone who likes intense action, detailed descriptions of scientific principals, and doesn't mind a bit of foul language. Looking forward to seeing the movie now.
