Historia
Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug-dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. In fact, by age twenty, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most prestigious universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her?

Excellent story and narration
Revisado: 06-08-24
It took me a little bit to get into it but once I did - I was hooked. I went back and forth between reading and the audio version I was so enthralled. The audio version I think I’ll definitely listen to all the way at some point - the narration is some of the best I’ve heard in a long time. The story is gripping, spooky, imaginative, daring, and with a heart of gold at the bottom of it. Something I love about Bardugo’s books is her analysis of power is complex — neither all bad or all good. Her characters just as fully formed. Highly recommend.

Historia
An award-winning journalist obsessed with obsession, Bianca Bosker’s existence was upended when she wandered into the art world—and couldn’t look away. Intrigued by artists who hyperventilate around their favorite colors and art fiends who max out credit cards to show hunks of metal they think can change the world, Bosker grew fixated on understanding why art matters and how she—or any of us—could engage with it more deeply.

Historia
In her first book, How to Do Nothing, Jenny Odell wrote about the importance of disconnecting from the “attention economy” to spend time in quiet contemplation. But how can we reclaim our time? In order to answer this seemingly simple question, Odell took a deep dive into the fundamental structure of our society and found that the clock we live by was built for profit, not people. This is why our lives, even in leisure, have come to seem like a series of moments to be bought, sold, and processed ever more efficiently.

Love Jenny Odell so much - narrator wasn’t my fave
Revisado: 03-24-24
I love Jenny Odell - she’s so wise and her mind is deeply intricate. This book does not disappoint. Didn’t love the narrator - they felt so neutral in terms of tonality that it didn’t feel like being read to by a real person. But love this book

With Quiet, Susan Cain urged our society to cultivate space for the undervalued, indispensable introverts among us, thereby revealing an untapped power hidden in plain sight. Now she employs the same mix of research, storytelling, and memoir to explore why we experience sorrow and longing, and how embracing the bittersweetness at the heart of life is the true path to creativity, connection, and transcendence.

Historia
What if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired another self—a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but, in a twisted, upside-down way, furthered the very causes you’d devoted your life to fighting against? Not long ago, the celebrated activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had just such an experience—she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were sufficiently similar to her own that many people got confused about who was who.

So grateful for Naomi Klein in the world. This book hits across so much of the philosophical, social, and political with ease and blending - which shows they’re always interwoven anyways. A beautiful personal radical book.

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Historia
Today’s optimistic farm-to-table food culture has a dark secret: The local food movement has failed to change how we eat. It has also offered a false promise for the future of food. In his visionary New York Times best-selling book, chef Dan Barber, recently showcased on Netflix’s Chef’s Table, offers a radical new way of thinking about food that will heal the land and taste good, too. Looking to the detrimental cooking of our past, and the misguided dining of our present, Barber points to a future “third plate”.

Perfect.
Revisado: 07-05-16
It was one of the first books, in a long time, that I really didn't want it to end. I've been thinking about all of this stuff for a long time but Barber made it all slip into perspective for me. It changed me. This book. Incredibly well-researched and argued. Incredibly thoughtful. You feel that Barber is still finding it all, not settling on one specific solution other than we must do better by our environment, our cultures, our history, our future, our food, our plates, our palates... And that it is all intersecting. Barber's performance is great. I could have him read to me forever.
It's just a great book. I really didn't want it to end.

Historia
Martin Simmond’s father tells him, “Never trust a musician when he speaks about love.” The advice comes too late. Martin already loves Dovidl Rapoport, an eerily gifted Polish violin prodigy whose parents left him in the Simmonds’s care before they perished in the Holocaust. For a time the two boys are closer than brothers. But on the day he is to make his official debut, Dovidl disappears. Only 40 years later does Martin get his first clue about what happened to him.

Great voice actor
Revisado: 02-18-16
I loved the reader. I thought he did a wonderful job narrating. It is obviously a beautiful and important story; I just couldn't ever really fall in love with the characters. They were all so self-involved, and not in an endearing way. But, a valuable existing within difficult times and the classic music industry. Even though I was never really able to *love* it; I recommend it.
