The whole is greater than its parts. Great listen
Revisado: 06-14-22
Aspects of the story have been explored by other authors but this story came together great and really held my attention in its grasp.
I'm looking for more in the series and more from the author.

Historia
The most recent state to join the union, Hawaii is the only one to have once been a royal kingdom. After its discovery by Captain Cook in the late 18th century, Hawaii was fought over by European powers determined to take advantage of its position as the crossroads of the Pacific. The arrival of the first missionaries marked the beginning of the struggle between a native culture with its ancient gods, sexual libertinism, and rites of human sacrifice and the rigid values of the Calvinists.

Well balanced and realistic appraisals
Revisado: 09-16-21
Finally a reasonable historical review that's interesting, engaging and not awkwardly forced through the lens of 'presentism'. Thanks Joe Barrett.

Historia
A thousand years have passed since a dragon has been seen in the world. Science and technology have replaced magic, which has dwindled until it has become little more than an element of myth and legend. There are those who still have dragon blood flowing through their veins, distant descendants of the mighty creatures of old. These rare humans have the power to cast magic, the power to heal, and the power to craft alchemical weapons capable of starting wars...or ending them.

Not even good enough for 14 year old girls
Revisado: 08-04-21
Clearly this was written for 14 year old girls who fantasize about dragons and being a sorceress and finding Love. But.. The AI that wrote this needs a few more upgrades before its work is released to the public.
I nearly always skip the reviews but this one was so exceptionally bad that I feel it's my civic duty to warn people.

The modern American hero
Revisado: 07-23-21
About half the voters in the US view our country as a broken, washed up, unjust patriarchal, hegemony that is destined to the dung heap of history. The hero in this book captures the representation of that sentiment. This is their Captain America.
I don't agree with that view of my country so this book became a painful slog to get through at some points.
Other than that it was an inventive story and a great performance.

Not a fan of the narrator
Revisado: 07-20-21
Story was good enough. I increased the speed of the reading to 1.05 so I wouldn't go to sleep. Narrator read it with a tremble in his voice as if on the verge of crying or being traumatized. I would prefer some energy and punch to the voice. Glad this book was 'included' at no extra charge to me.

Historia
When the last honest citizen of Poisonville was murdered, the Continental Op stayed on to punish the guilty--even if that meant taking on an entire town. Red Harvest is more than a superb crime novel: it is a classic exploration of corruption and violence in the American grain. From the author of The Maltese Falcon.

Great narrator
Revisado: 06-20-21
Narrator really breathes life into the characters. He transmits the time and place of the storyline. Gritty detective novel in the time of bootleggers. There's a historical perspective and cultural viewpoint, understandings of the time, that come across well.

Historia
Between Parker's 1961 debut and his return in the late 1990s, the world of crime changed considerably. Now fake IDs and credit cards have to be purchased from specialists; increasingly sophisticated policing makes escape and evasion tougher; and, worst of all, money has gone digital - the days of cash-stuffed payroll trucks were long gone. But cash isn't everything, and now Parker's after a fortune in jewels. In Flashfire, Parker's in West Palm Beach, competing with a crew that has an unhealthy love of explosions. When things go sour, Parker finds himself shot and trapped - and forced to rely on a civilian to survive.

Historia
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

Never knew I was so interested in Ancient History
Revisado: 05-06-21
I am learning that I love ancient history because it is relevant to me, today, and to my situation in the world. The writing style makes it entertaining and the narration seems to be a perfect fit.
This narrator might not be a great fit for other genres but he works great for this reading. Really brings it to life.

Historia
A towering genius who'd already solved the problem of death by making memory recording possible, Cassia leads a team of scientists and problem solvers to a station floating in the harsh winds of Saturn. Their mission: to grow interstellar ships using nanobots in the planet's material-rich environment. She called them "monsters" to help sell the project to a skeptical public. Little did she know how prophetic that name would become.

Not really sci fi
Revisado: 04-19-21
Sounds like this was written by someone who imagines what a young girl sci-fi reader would be interested in.
I just don't think the writer understands the Sci-fi demographic very well.
