The historical events make for a fascinating story, but the twisted plots and counterplots and complicated characters made understanding the narrative very hard work.
The narration was very skilled, but trying to comprehend the characters names, keep a track of the places and the relationships between all the protagonists just made this book to much hard work
I enjoyed very much Mantels other works, but found this book just too much to bear-persisting to the end it just left me very gloomy and feeling it's no wonder today's world feels so unsafe

But then, she takes on an armed and crazed soldier tyrant, battles a savage half starved wolf, wins over the chieftain, manipulates a whole Scottish clan to do her bidding And frees her man from prison chains while death by snowstorm stalks outside- in the space of half a chapter spanning twelve hours or less.....
And this is just the first instalment.
I do hope it doesn't go over the top too often.
Very very enjoyable up to that point, and did calm down reasonably once our heroines lover was out of the clutches of the English.
Slips into a little too much detail from time to time, but that is all neatly tied back into the story lines deep examination of the main characters responses to love and life.
Little worried that have left a link for my daughter to read also, but then, it actually is nothing she won't see everyday on TV or even on the street of any city I guess. Just very uncomfortably realistic.
Very well written and imaginative story. Narrator slightly annoying (no woman pouts and takes umbrage as often as this character does in parts...) but the Scottish lilt is just right, and the range of characters very well done by a single reader. Bring on the next episode 😄

Starting to wonder about the painfully clumsy detailed battle moves and erratic emotions of the characters. The story feels stretched and I'm worrying about having preordered the whole series-it's playing out in my head just like a PlayStation game.
So much potential for a richer story but I think it's too drawn out.
Starting to understand why there's only one film......

I read to kill a mockingbird as part of my school work, decades ago but how lovely to hear sissy spacek bring it to life . Very enjoyable.

Wouldn't this earth be a better place if we could all stand up to the miss Hilly's of this world and tell them to butt out, they are wrong.
In a similar time frame as the "secret world of bees", a story of contemporary American society in turbulent times, that needed to be told. I'd love the story to go on with a sequel......

Totally enraptured by this wonderful treatment of a great, very sad but- must-be-told 20th century tale.
To hear the story from the narrators perspective, with his little asides and commentary and his insights, observations and lessons of the human condition just really bring this work to life.
I loved it.
A must hear for every one!

Having read and reread every version published, and loving the story, I wanted to experience a dramatisation. A reasonable introduction

I like the Robert Langdon character, and the semi historical nature of the plot I dan Browns stories is excellent.
However
This one lost itself and became unconvincing in the last few chapters. After the dramatic climax, the key scene the whole plot had been building towards, it was totally unbelievable that the cast would then wander off sightseeing and continue discussing historical contexts of religion and politics , given what they'd just been through. at the end it totally spoiled the whole experience for me.

Set in a sliver of tumultuous contemporary American history, the story follows Lilly's search for her true self and is warm, funny, sad, tragic, comical, romantic, instructive, serendipitous and slowly unravelling a raw truth and a bond that draws all the characters together. An unexpected joy.
