Historia
In 10 lectures, award-winning historian Patrick N. Allitt transports listeners to England in the 1840s and 1850s. During those two decades, Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, became one of the most influential people in the country and remains a figure of fascination even today. In fact, the British royal family as we know it wouldn't exist without the private and public actions of this detached, impartial, and upright political figure.

Great bio, even greater lecturer

Professor Allitt is without a doubt my favourite of the Great Courses lecturers: great, broad knowledge and an engaging, pleasant voice. More please!

In The World of J.R.R. Tolkien, you will join Dr. Dimitra Fimi to delve into Tolkien’s complex and multilayered mythology, examining all these ingredients and more. In these 10 lectures, you will explore and appreciate Middle-earth as medieval, mythological, and modern, a literary creation that was shaped by forces old and new. And you may be surprised to discover just how much of Tolkien’s legendarium was constructed posthumously, with his son Christopher compiling and publishing many of Tolkien’s later works after his death.

Revisado: 10-02-24
I thoroughly recommend these lectures. I learned a lot and feel that I now have a deeper understanding of both books and Tolkien himself.
The author is very clearly a deeply passionate expert on the topic and as a bonus she is a good narrator with a pleasant voice.

Historia
Gary Thorn is struggling with a big decision. Should he stay in London, wallowing in the safety of his legal job in Peckham and eating pies with his next door neighbour, Grace and her dog Lassoo, or should he move to Brighton, where his girlfriend Emily is about to open The Hotel Avocado? Either way, he’d be letting someone down. But sinister forces are gathering in a cloud of launderette scented-vape smoke, and the arrival of the mysterious Mr Sequence puts Gary in an even worse predicament: soon he might be dead.

Mortimer's language is unusual and amazing
Revisado: 09-16-24
Just like the first book in the series, the great thing isn't necessarily the plot, but rather Bob Mortimer's wonderful language and odd phrases. I really liked that there were several narrators.

Great book if you don't expect The Midnight Library
Revisado: 09-10-24
I loved The Midnight Library so much, I had way too high expectations on this one. It's a lovely book with some great characters and listening to Joanna Lumley is a delight. Especially the main character is presented very convincingly as regards her regrets about her past.

Historia
Back in her natural habitat, Dr Nell Ward heads to a woodland pond to survey local newt populations. She's shocked to discover a car submerged in the water - with the driver dead behind the wheel. Nell recognises the dead man as professional racing driver, and tabloid love rat, Jack Rafferty, whose performance on (and off) Finchmere's racetrack had earned him enemies. Suspecting this isn't the tragic accident it appears DI James Clark calls upon Nell and her ecological skills to help find the murderer.

Revisado: 08-25-24
As I obviously enjoy the scientific bits best, I wonder if The Great Courses could persuade the author to do a course on ecology instead? Jokes aside, it starts to feel a bit 'samey'. Good fun and all that, but three books feel plenty at this point.

Good fun, nothing complicated
Revisado: 08-21-24
A refreshing take on the cozy mystery genre with the ecology aspect. A bit more romance than in your normal murder mystery, but that's OK. I preferred the info about bats tbh. Some willing suspension of disbelief, but hey, people watch Midsomer Murders with a gazillion murders in one tiny village so before you go all "the case against X wasn't plausible" ... well, just enjoy the fun bits. I wasn't keen on the narrators "male" voices, but by book 2, I had got used to them.

Can't believe this was written almost 200 years ago
Revisado: 06-02-24
I loved this book. Thoreau discusses things I have been pondering for a while - but he was a young man when he wrote the book, not to mention that he lived in the woods in the 1840's! I love the philosophy, I love the directness. If you have ever questioned the way we live - listen to this, it may just change your life.

Revisado: 05-12-24
Tom Allen is a witty, relatable storyteller and this is a lovely homage to his dad. With all the stories out there about abusive fathers and narcissist mothers, it's absolutely wonderful to hear about a couple who truly love their children.
