Historia
Throughout history generations of young men have fought in wars started by old men. There is no experience other than combat that makes a more lasting or life changing impression on a man or woman. The majority who have seen the battlefield saw combat before their 25th birthday, and many who did never got to celebrate that anniversary. Those who do come back are forever changed. Krebs in Hemmingway's "Soldier's Home" for instance.

Painfully bad reading
Revisado: 04-12-23
A very good private's-eye experience of the Great War, with shades of Red Badge of Courage. I'm grateful to have "read" it, but the listening was really challenging. Cadence, pronunciation, emphasis -- all jarringly stilted throughout. A shame to detract so from a powerful story.

Historia
At first light on Tuesday, May 28th, 1918, waves of American riflemen from the US Army's First Division climbed from their trenches, charged across the shell-scarred French dirt of no-man's-land, and captured the hilltop village of Cantigny from the grip of the German Army. Those who survived the enemy machine-gun fire and hand-to-hand fighting held on for the next two days and nights in shallow foxholes under the sting of mustard gas and crushing steel of artillery fire.

Outstanding storytelling.
Revisado: 04-26-21
Seamlessly weaves soldiers' personal vignettes, minute tactical details and the strategic sweep of the battle into a coherent, moving narrative without becoming either overly morose or preachy.

Historia
In Thunder in the Argonne, Douglas V. Mastriano offers the most comprehensive account of this legendary campaign to date. Not only does he provide American, French, and British perspectives on the offensive, but he also offers - for the first time in English - the German view. Mastriano presents a balanced analysis of successes and failures at all levels of command, examining the leadership of the principals while also illuminating acts of heroism by individual soldiers.

The narrator makes this almost unlistenable.

Solid Scholarship, Terrible Editorializing
Revisado: 03-29-21
A nice job pulling together the actions of the AEF in ending the war, and a good argument for their importance. The overt, often shockingly negative, editorializing, warmongering, and particularly the endless promotion of Christian Nationalist doctrine, made it a struggle. The author seems to view most American commanders as incompetent glory hounds, saved by the heroism of their men, among whom only "good Christians" were capable of true patriotism and real bravery.
