Historia
Is the Constitution a living document that needs to evolve with the times? Or should we try to divine the original meaning that our Founding Fathers intended, and hew to that as strictly as possible, as present-day originalists suggest? In The Year of Living Constitutionally, A.J. Jacobs tries to get inside the minds of the Founding Fathers by living as closely as possible to the original meaning of the Constitution.

A book by a liberal about democracy and the Constitution
Revisado: 01-25-25
A book by a liberal about democracy and the Constitution. rarely a hopeful thing, unfortunately. but in this, I'm proud and grateful to see the author take the question he poses about American democracy seriously, and to Levy reasonable criticisms without hopeless America bashing. a truly insightful view, and although I don't agree with 100% of what was said (I am a liberal myself, but a rather moderate one), I finished this book with a better understanding of the American Constitution, American democracy, and of the context in which it was founded.
This book, like everything else by this author that I have read so far, is very much worth a read if you've got the time.

Historia
Scientists are learning more and more about how brain activity controls behavior and how neural circuits weigh alternatives and initiate actions. As we probe ever deeper into the mechanics of decision making, many conclude that agency—or free will—is an illusion. In Free Agents, leading neuroscientist Kevin Mitchell presents a wealth of evidence to the contrary, arguing that we are not mere machines responding to physical forces but agents acting with purpose.

Does this guy ever talk about free will?
Revisado: 01-20-25
seriously, does this side literally EVER DISCUSS OR EVEN DEFINE THE CONCEPT OF FREE WILL?
I'm eight chapters in and he has ignorantly discussed biology at uncomfortable length but has said very nearly nothing about free will.
Did the author actually forget what his book was supposedly about? RAMBLING BUFFOON.

Omar Haddad is a brutal jihadist in Syria who appears to be invulnerable and capable of supernatural feats. But is Haddad divine, as he claims? Is he a gifted magician? Or is he making use of a stunning scientific breakthrough? And what, exactly, is keeping him from unleashing the global apocalypse he’s so eager to bring about? Brennan Craft, a quirky quantum physics genius, has the answers, and the US military is desperate to capture him.

Overtly bad science pulls me out of the story.
Revisado: 05-18-23
The "science" represented in this book is so overtly bad that it pulls me right out of the story.
What's worse, it reinforces pseudoscientific nonsense that's pervaded popular culture for decades - like the notion that the collapse of a particle wave function requires a conscious observer rather than just an interaction with another particle (conscious or not).
It's nonsense.

Historia
One of the most talked-about scholarly works of the past 50 years, Judith Butler's Gender Trouble is as celebrated as it is controversial. Arguing that traditional feminism is wrong to look to a natural, "essential" notion of the female, or indeed of sex or gender, Butler starts by questioning the category "woman" and continues in this vein with examinations of "the masculine" and "the feminine." Best known however, but also most often misinterpreted, is Butler's concept of gender as a reiterated social performance rather than the expression of a prior reality.

Misandrist tripe.
Revisado: 10-12-22
If you're not a misandrist, this book isn't for you.
the overly-inflated academic language has the author using a hundred words to say something that could be expressed in a single simple sentence, just to inflate her own ego. and the narrator constantly sounds like she's angry with you 🤔

Historia
In Survival of the Richest, Rushkoff traces the origins of The Mindset in science and technology through its current expression in missions to Mars, island bunkers, AI futurism, and the metaverse. In a dozen urgent, electrifying chapters, he confronts tech utopianism, the datafication of all human interaction, and the exploitation of that data by corporations. Through fascinating characters, Rushkoff explains why those with the most power to change our current trajectory have no interest in doing so.

Though the world is far from perfect, necessities and luxuries alike are getting cheaper; population growth is slowing; Africa is following Asia out of poverty; the Internet, the mobile phone, and container shipping are enriching people's lives as never before.

not bad, but not objective
Revisado: 03-02-22
the author obviously takes an overly liberal view and interpretation of facts, but there are a lot of really good points made. I just have a problem with the anti-male views and interpretations expressed. for example, the author claiming that the secondary education enrollment and acceptance gender gap has completely disappeared... because there are now significantly more women being accepted into colleges than men. that is obviously just a gap of another kind, but it's obviously the kind that the author doesn't care about because it only hurts men.
other than a few points like this though, the book was okay overall. if you can get past that, you might enjoy it.

The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face.

absolutely incomprehensible accents
Revisado: 09-22-21
there is no reason to use so many different voice actors with so many completely incomprehensible accents. I genuinely could not follow or understand a lot of this book, because of how thick so many of the accents were. I had to buy it a second time on paperback, that's how bad it was.
