Five star listen

It all began with the purchase of a box.
Beth and Stu Davenport moved to a quiet, remote English village with their young son Gabriel. But one night their idyllic life is ruined by an ancient darkness that shatters their dream and changes their lives forever.
I loved this book when I first read it and I jumped at the chance to listen to the audiobook. This story hooked me from the first chapter. The dark gothic vibe, unusual characters and found family are all things I enjoy in a book. It’s perfectly paced and suspenseful. The thing with audiobooks is listening to a story really accentuates any flaws in the writing—word choice, awkward dialogue, etc. This is where Beverley Lee really shines with her beautiful writing. I highly recommend this one and I’m looking forward to the rest of this series coming out on audio.

Quiet horror
Revisado: 10-15-21
When horror author David Lansdown is forced to retreat from the spotlight after an all too public scandal, he heads out to the remote countryside to stay at a house called Bone Hollow. The house is new but the land it’s built on has a dark history. David tries to immerse himself in his writing but is plagued by strange occurrences. Meanwhile, David’s cast aside lover Luca Fox-Waite begins digging into Bone Hollow’s grim past and we learn more about Luca’s own haunted childhood. As both storylines come to a head, Bone Hollow might just change supernatural skeptic David into a true believer.
I listened to The House of Little Bones on audiobook, which was the perfect choice. Beverley Lee’s beautiful writing really lends itself to being read aloud. I loved this quiet, heartbreaking, atmospheric horror novella. All the stars!

The Italian police, after ruling Flora innocent of murder, persuade her to spy on her employers.

An art restoration mystery

“In the magical historically rich city of Siena, Italy, old paintings are as common as cobblestones. But what if some of those paintings are forgeries? And what if your employers at Restauro Lorenzetti, a respected firm of art conservators, might be smuggling antiquities?”
Flora Garibaldi is an American art restorer working for the Lorenzetti family business. The story opens with the suspicious death of Flora’s roommate Ernst. The police declare it a murder and the story unfolds from there. We meet various members of the Lorenzetti family, who may or may not be involved in criminal activities.
The author, Sarah Wisseman, has done a wonderful job with creating a sense of place. We get beautiful descriptions of the Piazza del Campo, the food (yum!), and the art. I loved the behind the scenes view of art restoration, something I find fascinating.
I enjoyed this audiobook and Carrie Coello’s narration was wonderful, as always. Her accent sounded perfect to my admittedly uneducated ears.
I would like to thank her for sending me this audiobook.

Suspenseful dystopian tale
Revisado: 08-22-19
The story opens with two young women, known as A2 and B2, who have no memory of who they are or where they’ve come from. They are in a sterile environment, a hospital or maybe a lab, and are given daily injections to keep the memories at bay and some kind of vaccine. When the women escape, I was as curious as they were: what’s out there? They were locked up and uninformed. Have they really escaped? What has happened in the outside world? And what were they being vaccinated against?
I was sent this audiobook by the narrator Carrie Coello. She did an amazing job creating a distinct voice for each character. She has a wonderful voice that I enjoyed listening to and a great sense of pacing. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
