Historia
After years of watching patients cycle through her practice, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon noticed a pattern. While her patients struggled with a wide range of conditions, they all suffered from the same core problem: they had too little muscle rather than too much fat.

Eat more protein
Revisado: 07-09-24
Thanks to Dr. Lyon, as this is the first diet in my life that has actually worked. Been following this advice for two months, and the additional protein has given me strength and muscle back, well into my fifties. And the satiety from the protein has kept me from reaching for snacks full of junk. The mental focus is also an important aspect, just focusing on protein first has really helped.

Historia
The Battle of Serenity Valley was the turning point that led the Independents to their defeat at the hands of the Alliance. Yet the Browncoats had held the valley for weeks against all odds, before being ordered to lay down their arms. Command stated they refused to send in airpower because the ground war was "too hot". But the soldiers who were there insist that was not true.... While picking up a new cargo on Persephone, Captain Malcolm Reynolds is kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats who suspect him of sabotaging the Independents during the war.

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries.

Not a Discworld novel, but it could be!
Revisado: 08-29-22
Funny, clever story about a young baker living in a Fantasy realm (Arthurian, magical). She has some magic, but only in manipulating dough. This makes her an exceptional baker, a life in which she is quite content. But then there is a murder, a conspiracy, and a sourdough starter with an attitude. More is called upon from our young, magical baker. But all she can do is manipulate bread!
And without spoiling too much of the plot, I will just say that I enjoyed the main characters as much as any in this genre. I hope this isn't the last we've seen of Mona, Spindle, Bob, and the rest. And as for the writing and the dialogue - well, I laughed a lot.
This qualifies as a young adult novel. And will sit on my bookshelf close to Pratchett's Discworld books. For those of you who miss Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and especially Tiffany Aching - I recommend this.
Another comparison, for those of you unfamiliar with Discworld, would be "The Princess Bride."
Finally, this is the first novel I've read from this author, but looking forward to reading more.

Quirky, clever Psychic detective story
Revisado: 08-29-22
A light, funny take on an accidental psychic detective. Technically, a travel agent, our heroine stumbles into helping a detective solve a murder (or2 or 3). The characters are fun, the Seattle backdrop is solid. The main characters were well fleshed out, a couple of red herrings to keep us guessing, and the karaoke scenes were a blast.

Historia
Nell Young’s whole life and greatest passion is cartography. Her father, Dr. Daniel Young, is a legend in the field, and Nell’s personal hero. But she hasn't seen or spoken to him ever since he cruelly fired her and destroyed her reputation after an argument over a cheap old gas station highway map. But when Dr. Young is found dead in his office at the New York Public Library, with the very same seemingly worthless map hidden in his desk, Nell can’t resist investigating. To her surprise, she soon discovers that the map is incredibly valuable, and also exceedingly rare.

Mediocre at best. Narrators were good.
Revisado: 05-27-22
I'm a fan of old maps. And a fan of books like the Midnight Circus, and hoped this would be in a similar vein. So, I was pretty excited about this going in. But, the characters are one dimensional, and it's pretty inconceivable that a group of friends went from living and working together for close to a decade, to never speaking to each other for over 25 years. And in that process, all of them (except the father) abandoning a two yr old child that they all loved as family. And while the father stayed in the girls life, he was barely there. (How is this character not seriously messed up, and in therapy? Talk about abandonment issues).
And there is a problem with the "Magic" within the maps. Such a lame concept. If mistakes in a map can suddenly become real, including one hand drawn on a business card, then I guess any hand drawn anything can become real? No special process, paper, ink, magical incantation. Nope. Any person can draw anything into existence. And THESE characters are the first in all the history of humanity to stumble upon it.

Historia
Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

Superheroes, in the 1930's... and it's Awesome!
Revisado: 03-09-19
Correia has built a whole new world where people have superpowers, attributed to magic as opposed to an X-gene, gamma rays, or radioactive insect bites. The plot and the alternate 1920's backdrop are all incredibly well done, the characters are well thought out and have depth, and the villains are wonderfully evil. It's a clever, well told tale.
This is my new favorite series, I've already added the next couple of books into my wish list/ library.
I didn't love Pinchot's narration to start, but his style quickly grew on me and I was able to get properly lost in the tale.

Solid sci-fi
Revisado: 12-12-18
I really enjoyed Ms. Belmont's narration. She has a fluid style that allows the listener to quickly and easily immerse themselves into the story.
This is more a novella than a novel. Everything kind of leaves me wanting more. I wanted to know many of the characters better than we got to know them in this book. So many of the secondary characters seemed interesting, yet briefly met.
And my biggest complaint would be that I don't exactly understand why the villains were in fact the villains. Their organization would seem to be the type to help people, at least in theory. I can understand incompetence from such an organization, but not the decision to be so antagonistic.
Still, an interesting world, and one I'd like to see more of.

There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it's unwise to walk. Sunshine knew that. But there hadn't been any trouble out at the lake for years, and she needed a place to be alone for a while. Unfortunately, she wasn't alone. She never heard them coming. Of course you don't, when they're vampires.

Fast paced action slightly sci fi kind of fun!
Revisado: 09-29-17
Slightly futuristic, lots of cool tech that is believably just a decade or two or way. Good action, and lots of twists and turns. Action takes precedence over character development, but by the end of the book, I came away liking the main characters. I would definitely read a sequel.
The narrator was great, I stayed fully immersed in the story, and the variety of voices and pace kept me hooked.

Historia
The irresistible David Freed’s first mystery is a stay-up-late-to-finish thriller. Based in sunny Rancho Bonita - “California’s Monaco”, as the city’s moneyed minions like to call it - Cordell Logan is a literate, sardonic flight instructor and aspiring Buddhist with dwindling savings and a shadowy past. When his beautiful ex-wife, Savannah, shows up out of the blue to tell him that her husband has been murdered in Los Angeles, Logan is quietly pleased. Savannah’s late husband, after all, is Arlo Echevarria, the man she left Logan for.

Revisado: 09-24-17
The story is fine, a few too many Red Herrings for my taste. Still, solid enough mystery. Ray Porter does a great job bring the book and characters to life, and has become a narrator I look for whenever I am in the mood to try a new author.
