Fascinating dystopian AI read

Satirical-George-Orwell-Hunger Games/Handsmaid/Westworld (w/o the killings, baby making handmaids...) + a bit of 🇨🇳 with the universal social ranking system type spin on a futuristic dystopian AI world created by privileged multi-billionnaires who think they know best and can control people.

The book touched on everything... Socio-economic inequality, racism, history of colonization and slavery, government control, dictatorship, political end game, religion, abortion, capitalism and consumerism, data sharing, social media, dating, gender roles, what family "looks like" and so much more... Definitely an interesting read. I did the audiobook

Qualityland= hands down the U.S
EveryBody= Facebook + Mark Zuckerberg
TheShop= Amazon +Jeff Besos
John of US = the elite of the world's top 1% billionaires
Martyn Chairman= Tesla + SpaceX+ now Twitter + Elon Musk
Peter Jobless= The average American who doesn't want to be controlled by social media, consumerism, and the government

I hear HBO is making this book into a series... Can't wait to see how this turns out

Fascinating story of identity and belonging

What a fascinating story of identity and belonging. I love books that tie in history, culture and tradition. I didn't realize there was such a thing called Washington Street or Little Syria in New York. Reading this expanded my view on migration, Syria, the Ottoman Empire, migrant stories to New York, ornithology and how similar some values and traditions can be across nationalities.

I think I would have like to have seen some more character development... especially what happened to Elias and Nadir after the aunt stumbled upon them...

Was Nadir dreaming the whole time too btw or was it only a small part of the story when he saw Layla's ghost and stuff and the author then had Layla narrate her story?

I quite enjoyed the use of birds and what different types of birds mean especially when the protagonist is trying to find himself... it makes me wonder if it's a bit biographical or perhaps part of Nadir represents the author?

Not sure why but this style of writing reminded me of The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shakaf.

Can't wait to read Map of Salt and Stars...

wow! I've been looking forward to reading this book! I first came across Simu from Kim's Convenience and he was such a likeable character! Then Shang-chi came out and I was floored by his performance. Once in a while, he'll come through my social media feeds and YouTube recommends and his interviews are always full of light and his positivity simply radiates.

His story, struggles, failures and success were too real. By family dynamics and parental expectations echoed too loud as if he was telling my story. Act 1 was my favorite... Giving us an in-depth look into his familial history from his grandparents, parents, Chinese history and regime, his parents making the difficult decision to leave him behind in Herbing China to further their education in hope of a better future... their time in Beijing, his parents moving to the the U.S, then Toronto Canada... and Simu growing up on Canada and navigating through the complexities of being invisible and being othered.
I would really love to see an interview of his parents... maybe they can sit down with Oprah and do one of her Super Soul Sunday sessions. They were professionals in China and had to start completely over in Canada... his parents sacrificed a lot and humbled themselves to survive and look at them now... Look at their sons...

Now this... is a successful immigrant story.

I cried, and smile and called out "no way! me too dude!". And now my heart is full of appreciation and gratitude.

Amazing story. I recommend the audiobook. Simu tells his own story and he's so raw and emotional at times... grab some tissues.

Because of the recent war in Ukraine I wanted to be more familiar with its history and how it's possible to be at war in 2022. Anne's presentation of the timelines and facts gave a clear, hollow, gloomful look into the soviet union, Russian, genocide, radicalized thinking, misinformation and greed that killed millions of people. I hope that there is continued peace in the world and that we can continue to work and live harmoniously.

what in the world did I just read? why are all the women described in disgusting ways? everything is just grotesque and gross.
also there were a good 5 chapters that I didn't necessarily think needed to be included... like chapter 6 with Shodancho going to war... like why did we need to know that?
finally we get to the last chapter that tells what truly happened... ghosts, evil spirits and revenge oh my. ghosts assuming other identities... like what? I need a mm to mentally wash off all those disturbing things I read in this book.

beauty is a wound... like beauty is a curse? not sure if lost in translation?

As a woman im in my feelings that a man sat down and thought of a story in such a grotesque way but that's just me...

Burnout is real.
listening to your body and learning to truly rest are essential to self care. You can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself.

Strive to find joy.

i'm glad I did the audio version of this book. it was a good pep talk... Some parts reminded me of the Invisible Women: Data Bias book by Caroline Perez which I liked. Some other areas like their own life experiences and Sophie's I wish they would have included more research and facts vs their own... but that's just me. I liked the perky optimistically upbeat voice of the book but there were areas that it didn't deem necessary.
I loved the guest 2 chapters then the one of social connections 6, then 8 and the conclusion/afterword.
