I am disappointed in Luke

I've been a fan of Luke's work for a while now but this is the worst book he's created. We have wuxia sect masquerading as a military. Instructors that would rather sneer, mock, or watch them kill each other rather than actually teach. And a training program that seems like it's just trying to pump out battle ready mages as fast as it can instead of actually training people.

As always Travis's performance was amazing, but this was the worst book in the series. This is probably filler, I won't be continuing the series.

I like the concept and the delivery almost made it. author either needs a new translator/localiser or need to needs to move away from non human writen books.

Thom wasn't given any real personality other than he's smart, blunt, and demanding. The author seems to be making the assumptions that reader just knows what's going on and skips detail or world building oppopportunities. Narrator was great though!

I don't know if this is supposed to be written like this as a parody or not to the xainxi genre. But while it is a decent story it's like the author just assumes you have the context of some of the things that happen. the only other thing I would nit pick about is the MC sometimes seems like he has 3 personalities. An internal one were he's kinda self goof ball and a bit mature, the one where he picks fights with everyone for the most minor of slight, and the kind noble hero that rush in to save the day. And it kinda gives me literary whiplash.

This book was filler. You can skip it and miss almost nothing. I like the series but this is a blatant money grab to stretch put the story. nothing happens in that's note worthy. Spoiler; he should have atleast been healed in this book and it would have somewhat made it worth the listen.

non of this is enough to actually make yhe story bad, but it gives nothing to the story either. I understand she started as a mascot character, but once she became intelligent that should have changed. She's had little to no character growth. Even at the age of 30 she's little more than a child with power. She's incredibly arrogant, with a deeply nihilistic concept. If she doesn't eventually become the villain of the story I would be surprised.

Shane went from 3D to 2D

I'm not really digging the character growth Shane has gone through. He's gone from a cautious inexperienced, but enthusiastic young man experimenting with a adaptable power to a thug that can grant a few minor wishes. When he chose the name Solomn I though he was going to start monkey pawing bad guys into doing the right thing, or something along those line, instead we got a battle junkie in less than a half a book. I'm probably not picking up the fourth book. Narrator is a tad dry.

It's a power fantasy and that's about it.

The writing is good, but there's no depth to the story, I was drawn in by what I thought was going to be a simple yet flexible system but those hope got shot down about half what through the book. the title is a bit deceptive, I thought I was going in on a story about a kid who find an alternative way to gain power in a system but we can tell that it was ment to be literal by how uncomplex the story is. It's not a bad story, it's just not great.
