Historia
Dr Jekyll, a charming doctor explores the possibility of dividing the dark and light side of her personality, but in doing this she creates a monster, Eleanor Hyde. For many years she manages to live under the radar, keeping her dark secret unknown to those around her. However, gradually her evil side gains strength until Dr Jekyll is overwhelmed by Eleanor Hyde, to disastrous consequences. An exploration of human duality and forces of good and evil, this modern retelling is compelling and eerie and retains the disturbing nature of the original text.

Unadulterated crap
Revisado: 04-08-23
Yawn, yawn, yawn.
Anything good was in the original. Not shocking, not engaging, not worth the time spent.
Gender switch added no fresh insight and rather than introducing a different perspective made room for old fashioned chauvinism.
No fun

5-star reviews on amazon.co.uk from the Booker Prize-shortlisted author of The Good Doctor comes a gripping novel of guilty secrets, obsession and self-reinvention, set on the African savannah. When Adam moves into the abandoned house on the dusty edge of town, he is hoping to recover from the loss of his job and his home in the city. But when he meets Canning - a shadowy figure from his childhood - and Canning's enigmatic and beautiful wife, a sinister new chapter in his life begins...

Performance so bad I cannot listen further
Revisado: 08-31-22
Galgut is South African and his story is set in South Africa. I am South African too but the narrator is not. His accents are inconsistent and inappropriate.
So what does this mean for people who aren’t South African and do not know local accents?
Having no anchor opens the door to caricature. For instance, one brother speaks like a condescending English spoon and the other - a bit like an Ausie. In other words, that they grew up in the same house is entirely implausible.
Etc etc.
As for the story itself, two hours in, I do not identify with any of the characters and keep waiting for something to happen.
Let’s give Galgut the benefit of the doubt and say the terrible narration interrupted any identification with the characters.
Awful

Historia
When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him. Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home. Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member. And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police. Three women with separate connections to the victim. Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment. Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them.

Subtle, well written, deep characterisation. A book that could only be written by a woman (who doesn’t have much time for men).

Clever, imaginative, well written. Gaiman’s work resonates. Good characters, betrayal and allegorically true, like a subtext of American culture.
Excellently performed too.

Historia
In this “miracle of literary serendipity” (The Washington Post), after finding himself deep in the thrall of heroin addiction, the soldier arrives at what seems like the only logical solution: robbing banks. Written by a singularly talented, wildly imaginative debut novelist, Cherry is a bracingly funny and unexpectedly tender work of fiction straight from the dark heart of America.

Muddled genres, unfulfilled promise
Revisado: 11-07-20
The start is junkie noir with literary aspirations. On the basis of this beginning I had high hopes for the book.
Cut to boring war story in a boring war. A pastel version of any number of Viêt Nam books - talented undergrad work from The Things They Carried - not more.
Cut to story 1 although evidently the literary allusions were all used up in the first chapter.
And
We all get that an addict’s search for dope is an endless boring quest and the show-don’t-tell lesson. I would have been very pleased to save two hours with a sentence saying, “The same thing happened for a long time. “
Read Goines’s Dope Fiend for the real deal.
I am sorry I did not just switch this off.

Undergrad effort
Revisado: 12-24-19
In the clash between modern love and superstition that even the heroine laughs at, it turns out that astrology and motives reincarnated intact are the real truth - but not in an interesting way.
The characters are equally one dimensional.

In dire need of tighter editing
Revisado: 09-07-19
There were times when the repetition annoyed me as much as it seemed to upset the character. A clear instance of where “show, don’t tell,” was the wrong advice!
A good tale diminished by overly indulgent performances.

Historia
Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.

Unusual and remarkable
Revisado: 02-16-19
Well put together from several sources and read in an appropriate accent and tone. I found myself caring not only about an arbitrary group of men long ago but about an inhospitable island that no one I have known or will ever know, will visit.

Well researched but contrived and predictable
Revisado: 01-22-19
Fight scenes were much more passionate and credible than the sex scenes which were formulaic and cardboard. A sparrow who kills better than she fucks.
Locational and spy craft details were credible and well researched. (This is the books real strength.)
I got bored with the endless end of chapter recipes and the shallow characters.
Well read though self consciously the first in a series.
